Chapter 9 Journal: Called to Share the Good News, The New Testament Letters
SLUH Summer Theology Mega Site
1. What is the one key idea of this chapter?
The main idea of this chapter is called to share the Good News. We are called to spread Jesus' word like Paul did in the letters. Paul wrote most of the letters. These letters gave hope and encouragement to their communities. We are called to do the same with the poor or the sick. The people Paul wrote to or the Pauline letters were: to the Romans, to the Corinthians, to the Galatians, to the Ephesians, to the Philippians, to the Colossians, to the Thessalonians, to Philemon, and to the Hebrews. Paul spread the Good News to all of these people through his letters. We are called to spread the Good News through our words and actions.
2. Write about two major ideas you want to remember. Write a short paragraph on each clearly stating the idea and then telling why you want to remember it.
The first idea, I would want to remember, would the people Paul was writing to. Paul wrote letters to all kinds of people, but they were all Christians. I found interesting how these people kept their faith strong in times in trouble or doubt. I also found their background history interesting. These people could have easily given up faith, but they chose to stay with God. This may have been all because of Paul’s letters.
I would also like to remember the importance of the Catholic letters. These letters had many different authors than the Pauline ones. These letters are called Catholic, which means “universal”. This means these letters are for everybody. All the different writers had different ways of writing and different people to write to. I find this very interesting. These letters also helped preserve the early Church, and they also helped keep it united. Both of these ideas I find very important.
3. One image that captures the chapter for you.
4. One significant question you have from this chapter. It can be intellectual or personal.
For some of the Catholic letters, why are some named after someone, but aren’t written by them? May they be tributes to that person? Or may they really be written by them?
