Chapter 4 Journal: Called to Be Compassionate, The Gospel According to Mark
SLUH Summer Theology Mega Site
1. What is the one key idea of this chapter?
The main idea of this chapter is called to be compassionate. This means that we should care for others. The chapter also focuses on the Gospel of Mark. The Gospel of Mark gave the model for the the other Gospels. We are called to be compassionate just like Jesus. We are called to show compassion to the poor and suffering. We are also called to discipleship as well. We should follow Jesus is we claim we are Christians. The chapter had these two main ideas. Both of these are expressed in the Beatitudes.
2. Write about two major ideas you want to remember. Write a short paragraph on each clearly stating the idea and then telling why you want to remember it.
The first is the fact that the Gospel of Mark setup a model for the other Gospels. It was the first the first Gospel written. Mark was also the shortest. I like to see what ideas Mark has and then see what the others copied. I find this very interesting. The Gospel of Mark contains the bare facts on Jesus life. It contains everything we need to know in a considerably shorter version. The Gospels of Matthew and Luke were especially credited for being based on Mark.
The second idea I would remember is the importance of the Holy Land. The Holy Land is a holy city in the world's three major religions. These are: Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. For Judaism it has the Wailing Wall, which was the remainder of Solomon's temple. The Holy Land also holds the Dome Rock, which is a mosque that holds the rock where Abraham almost sacrificed Ishmael. This makes the Holy Land very important to Islam. Christianity has it as a holy city because this is where Jesus had his passion and death. I want to remember this because I believe it will relevant in the future, mainly between the Jews and the Islams. I also want to remember it because it has a very interesting history.
3. One image that captures the chapter for you.
4. One significant question you have from this chapter. It can be intellectual or personal.
Why is the Gospel of Mark your personal favorite? (Directed toward Mr. Sciuto)
