Faith
The dictionary defines faith as “unquestioning belief”. Some people take this definition literally and believe that faith means complete and utter trust in someone or something. I believe that faith is a process, one that defies definition and means different things to different people.
To me, faith is not unquestioning belief or complete trust. It involves both belief and trust, but not so much that you can never think for yourself. All true faith has periods of doubt. Jesus even doubted his Father’s decisions for his crucifixion and death. Without questioning and asking why we have faith in something, our faith is meaningless. Without reflection on our faith, we do know what we believe or why we believe in anything. If we live an unexamined faith life, we miss many opportunities to truly make it worthwhile and meaningful. Holden Caulfield is an example of an unexamined faith life for most of his adventure in The Catcher in the Rye. He has an almost unquestioning faith in most children and a mistrust of most adults. He never fully examines why he mistrusts adults and, therefore, misses out on many opportunities to make new relationships and take his life in a different direction, toward the responsibilities and privileges of adulthood.
Faith is something that cannot be completely defined. Every person has a unique definition of faith and what faith does in their lives. These differences make faith something hard to define because faith takes on a different place in everyone’s life. All people have different degrees of faith in certain things as well. Two people could hear the same policies of a presidential candidate and develop a different amount of faith that the candidate will try and carry out what he promised.
Though difficult to define, it is fair to say that faith comes into play in people’s most important decisions. The people you choose to have faith in could decide whether you live or die. If you trust someone to drive you to and from a party, you need to trust that they will not drink and drive. Faith in others is a necessary aspect of our lives because we need other people to help us live our lives completely. Without people to believe in, you miss out on opportunities to go to parties, learn about other people, and share your gifts and talents with others. Not only do you need to have faith in others, you also need to have faith in yourself. Without any faith in yourself, you will have difficulty in making decisions about yourself or others.
