Plymouth recieved a slight gain in the industry standings with the year of 1972, they were ale to produce 780,937, but becasue of the economy was able only to hold 6th place in the standings. Only minor changes were made through out the entire line this year. The Duster was virtually unchanged from 1971. Which was the same as 1970, which make most of the componets of these cars interchangeable. There was more focus on safety and pollution than in styling in this year. The Duster side strip was changed to a vinyl protection stripe. The Duster 340 remained unchanged, as did the Twister.

New to 1972 however was the "Gold Duster", it was specially equipped, and included a free vinyl roof. this new vinyl roof was the new canopy version, in Gold reptile grain with all body colors that were compatible with gold, and in black boar grain with other colors. the otehr special equipment included white walls on 5.5 inch wheels, special whel colors, drip moldings, special interior trim and color keyed carpets, gold rear deck tape strips, and a distinctive Gold Duster decal!

With the high performance market winding down, the auto motive indistry devised a new system of rating horse power in order to discourage consumer preoccupation with the "horse power wars". engine avalibility remained the same as in 1971 but with there new met ratings, were the 198 cid 1-barrel slant six @ 100 Horses, the 225 cid 1-barrel slant six rated at 110 horses, the 318 cid V-8 2-barrel rated at 150 horses, and the 340 V-8 rated at 240 horses. The transmissions were the same choices as before.

Sixteen exterior colors were avalible with basin street blue, tor-red, and lemon twist being extra cost colors. Vinyl roofs were avalibile in black, white, green or blue on all but the Gold Duster(which were noted above). interiors were offerd in 5 colors with bench or bucket seats.

Production amounted to 212,331 Dusters, and 15,681 Duster 340's. Suggusted retail prices effective october 1st 1971, were 2,287 for the duster six.and 2,407 for the V-8, with the duster 340 coming in at 2,728.
