Front End Problems

My front end got really tweaked while i was down in Baja. The cause was most likely the fact that i got the car off the ground between 50 and 100 times (I lost count).
There were basically two things that went wrong...

One of the welds (from the cut and turn lift) that held the center section of the lower tube cracked all the way through and got progressively worse as time passed (and as jumping continued).
The fix here would to not only weld the center section back in but perhaps weld some pieces of steel tubing over the weld as well to strengthen it further.

The other problem was where the lower torsion tube meets the shock tower. The joints here cracked entirely on the passenger side and were only about half way cracked on the drivers side. The metal appeared to be very brittle, perhaps the result of many years of sitting dorment in the rain.
The fix here would be to weld triangular gussets between the torsion tubes and the shock tower. Not only on the top where the upper tube meets the tower but the under side of the upper tube and where the lower tube meets the tower as well.

Another problem that i experienced was that one of my ball joints had warped it's socket so that it could rotate freely in the socket and come out at will. The sharp angle created because of the extreme lift is the only thing that kept it in most of the time. when i would hit some potholes or land from a jump at a funny angle, the ball joint would fall out of the socket. i could tell that it did it because it would get harder to steer. all i could do was hit it with a hammer so it would go back into it's socket. Then it would stay in untill the next jump.

I picked up a used trailing arm with a new ball joint in it for $25. Everything is good and solid again.
