Tranny mounts

The stock mounts are just pieces of rubber and fall apart quickly off-road. They don't just support the tranny, they support the engine as well, because the engine bolts ditectly to the tranny. There are heave duty mounting kits avaliable through mail order places and larger VW accesory stores. There are solid type mounts and padded type mounts. My baja had solid mounts when i got it. The front mount however has one of it's bolts stripped and the other one liked to come loose as well. Needless to say there were some pretty scary clunking noises while accelerating and deccelerating. The shifter would move as well.

To make things better i have installed a third mount. It goes in the middle, where the nosecone bolts to the rest of the tranny. The lower piece clamps to the frame horns and holds the bottem of the tranny in a little cradle. The strap that goes over the top of the tranny bolts to the top of the lower part of the kit.

I loosely bolted things together to see how everything should go, because the pieces were not symetrical. When the best fit was found i took it apart and attached the rubber strip to the parts of the kit that touch the tranny. I was careful to run the top strap under the throtle cable housing and wiring. It wouldn't fit under the clutch cable housing though, but this didn't present any problem. I was plesantly suprised to find that the kit actually fit well. It didn't take very long to install either, only about an hour.

The tranny is now very well supported and dosen't make those nasty clunking sounds any more. Joy!
