Why would a just God condemn "good" people who never had a chance to hear about Christ (e.g. people born before Christ, Native Americans) or rejected "organized Christianity" because of its shortcomings (e.g. Mahatma Gandhi)?
Even iat the beginning of the 21st century 27-40% of the world population have not had the opportunity to hear about Christ. See Unreached people groups.

What do you have to do to receive salvation and eternal life?

Most protestants believe that faith and repentance is all that is necessary to recieve salvation.
Catholics believe that acts are required also.
See faith vs works by Richard M Riss
There are Bible passages that support both positions.

Some relevant Bible passages:
John 3:16 - For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
1st Cor. 15:23 "But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. But each in his own turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him."
Mat 5:8 - "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
Acts 24:15 - "I have the same hope in God as these men, that there will be a resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked. "
John 5:25 - "A time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out--those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned. "
Romans 10:9 - "That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved."
Some were saying there was no resurrection of the body.
Acts 15:12 "But if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised."
The Morman Church (Latter-day Saints) believe you can represent someone who has passed away with a bapbism on their behalf. They are free to choose whether they accept it or not. They base it on the following scriptures:
Matthew 16:19 "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be[12] loosed in heaven."
John 3:5 - Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.
1 Corinthians 15:29 - Now if there is no resurrection, what will those do who are baptized for the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why are people baptized for them?
Acts 11:14: - "He will bring you a message through which you and all your household will be saved."
Acts 16:31 - "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved--you and your household."
