GP40-2 No. 3118

As of September 2004

This unit was heavily tagged by a graffiti "artist" on its right side in the late '90s.  Nevertheless, most of the original Rio Grande features may be discerned.

This view is the engineer's (right) side.

Rio Grande's GP40-2s came in several groups, as shown in this table.

1)  Note the stenciling on truck.

2) Rerail frog was hung here during Rio Grande ownership.

3) What is this thing?  Anybody?.

4) Original D&RGW stencils.

5) Dash-2 water level sight glass.

 
  • Date and gearing stencils, as well as maintenance notes.
  • Frogs were phased out during the SP era.  Prior to that, there was one on each side of the locomotive, above the trailing truck.
  • It looks like a newly-added fuel pump or something, but I don't know.  If you can ID this, send me a note.
  • These stencils appear on Microscale's DRGW Hood Unit decal set.  This will help to locate where they go.
  • The GP40-2s and SD40T-2s on the Rio Grande had this oval window.  Notice how it interferes with the herald on this side.

The graffiti makes me crazy, but it might make for an interesting modeling project!
