GP40-2 No. 3118

As of September 2004

This unit was heavily tagged by a graffiti "artist" on its right side in the late '90s.  Nevertheless, most of the original Rio Grande features may be discerned.

This view is the engineer's (right) side.

Rio Grande's GP40-2s came in several groups, as shown in this table.

1)  Note the stenciling on truck.

2) Horn has been removed from cab and relocated aft.

3) Original numberboards.

4) Class lights intact on this end.

5) Low-nose light intact on this unit.

6) SP-style ditch lights on front end.
  • The front stencil indicates the gearing ratio, 62:15.  I can't quite make out the other one, except for the date of 3-93.
  • See the photo of the left side for horn style and placement. This was most likely done during the SP era, circa 1995.
  • The front numberboards are original.
  • The signal (lower) light is intact, but seldom used any more.
  • Note that the ditch lights are mounted on stanchions above the deck on this end, indicating installation prior to the UP merger.

Sadly, the paint on this side of the locomotive is badly chipped up, in addition to the graffiti.
