1935 - Samuel Morse invented Morse code for telegraphs 1867 - James Maxwell developed his theories of electro- magnetic radiation 1885 - Marconi develops first wireless telegraph system 1887 - Heimrich Hertz demonstrates existence of radio waves 1901 - Marconi sends a radio signal from Cornwall, England to Newfoundland, 2800km 1903 - The Eiffel tower used as a wireless station 1909 - Marconi wins the Nobel prize for Physics 1914 - Marconi transmits speech nearly 50 miles 1919 - NDKA in Pitsburg in licensed as the first broadcast system 1922 - Marie Zimmerman becomes the first woman to own and operate a radio station, it was WIAE in Iowa 1925 - C. Francis Jenkin wrote an article about the next big thing predicted to hit the world after radio, a thing called "television". Television was regarded as "home radio movies" as that was the only comparsion people could make to television at that time 1927 - The FRC was created due tot he radio act of 1927 to deal with the 732 station on the air at the time 1934 - Radio became an everyday occurrence in homes across North America - The FCC was created to the Communications Act of 1934 1949 - RCA makes 45rpm, 7-inch disc 1955 - Portable radios are sold to public - Stereo tape recorders are sold to home market 1958 - First stereo LPs released 1961 - The FCC authorized regular FM stations, the first two of these WEFM and WGFM 1980 - Sony introduces the walkman 1983 - Sony and Philips introduce the CD player |
