As I entered the golden, shining gate I was trying to work out where I was. It was so very dreamlike. Was this reality or a vision? Lush green vines grew up and around me, encasing me in a shaded pathway. Juicy purple grapes hung temptingly from the vine. Should I eat one? No, I decided not to.
The more I walked further along the path, the greener everything became. The purple wisteria swayed in the gentle breeze, and I caught a whiff of the sweet smelling jasmine. Blood red roses bloomed around me, their perfume light and sweet.
But I musn't stand here gawking, I have to continue. Walking along the smooth cobblestone path felt refreshing on my bare feet. Soon I could see where I was headed. At the end of the long, shaded corridor was a bench. I had to reach it. I had no idea why, but some hidden part of me was reminding me that it was my goal to get there.
I reached the bench, not knowing how long it took me. Was it seconds, hours, days, or years? Time did not seem to matter here. I sat on the wooden bench and waited - not knowing what I was waiting for. My grandmother suddenly walked out of the greenery, her colourful robes drifting around her. She smiled gently and handed me a goblet filled with a drink. It was crystal clear, like water. Yet when I took a sip it tasted like all the most delicious fruits in the world ahd exploded refreshingly in my mouth. It tasted like heaven.
I looked up at my grandmother when I had finished. She nodded and smiled. I still had no idea why I was here, but it felt comfortable and familiar. Granma spoke the first whispering words in this warm silence. " You are home at last, child." She motioned for me to follow her, so I did. It was only then that I noticed the soft, gentle robes I had drifting around me. The feel was like nothing on earth.
We walked through a hibiscus covered archway and entered the most beautiful land. Lush green hills rolled off into the distance on my left, and on my right was a sparkling waterfall. The sun caught the water and a dazzling rainbow appeared. Tall trees were everywhere, and flowers blossomed around me in every imaginable shape and colour. This was paradise. Songs of the birds filled the air, and the rustlings of animals could be heard in the bushes.
Suddenly, a pure white dove appeared, flying down until it reached the ground in front of me. I looked behind me for my grandmother to reassure me, but she had vanished. I turned back to where the dove was, but in it's place was an angelic being. All around me were robed figures.
She raised her hand, and out of it shot a ray of golden light headed straight towards me. It surrounded me, encased me, and filled me in every imaginable way. When it disappeared I felt full of pure love and pure peace. I also was more aware of my surroundings, seeing beyond the horizon and the borders of time and space. If I listened carefully, I could hear the growing of a flower, the ageing of a rock, and the heartbeat of the earth.
When the angel spoke in her calm, musical voice, I knew my journey was over, yet a new chapter would begin. I also knew why I was here.
"Welcome to heaven, child."
