"Origins of Jonas Ricks
Tue, 11 Apr 2000
From: "Donald M. Ricks"

Hello, Eve Gregory:
The answer to where Jonas might have originated remains far, far at the end of any tunnel I've looked down. Most of the history books that address migration patterns of early Guilford County settlers conclude that many were of German origin, Scots and Englishmen from the northeast of North Carolina, and Quakers from Pennsylvania.
There is an old gentleman named Flythe, who I met in Raleigh, who believes (without a source) that Jonas was the son of one John Ricks, an undocumented son of Isaac Ricks Jr of Isle of Wight County. He believes this John moved into North Carolina about 1750 and soon died. There is no record of him there, and the listing of children from Quaker records (on file at a Boston repository) of this Isaac is torn three children down the list.
Several things I know about Jonas, as stated in chapter 2 of my book: Apparently he did not read or write, he was not visible in records, and he was a person who did not make waves in the community. So, he was not colorful, a person who enjoyed privacy, and one who stayed where he first settled. There might be some clues in his profile, but for the life of me I cannot translate them into useful tools to locate him. He was a blacksmith, cooper, and a farmer. Surprisingly, many Rickses made a living with those first two skills. I recently learned that the man who compiled the first Ricks book was (in 1850) an artificer; his father was a blacksmith, and his brother was a tool maker. This family lived in Orleans County, New York, which is located between Niagra Falls and Rochester. Their surname was spelled Rix. Jonas first appeared in records as Jonas Rix, but that doesn't mean much in later records.
My computer is full of research reports and inquiries about the Ricks/Rix family. Very early I began to keep my messages and reports in a monthly file, and as I close out a monthly file I would link it to a yearly file, a master document. I have these since 1992. If I want to look for a particular record or event in my research, I merely use the search feature in Word to locate the object of my interest. I also used standard heading levels for (subject) messages and titles of reports, so if I want to check the subject I call up the master document and look at only heading levels i and 2. My yearly files are a diary, of sorts. So, yes, I am interested in colonial and English records pertaining to my surname.
We will be in the Grand Canyon area this time next month. I look forward to getting away.
Happy Easter, --
