Josiah Ricks, of Shelby County, Alabama

These are my personal research notes, extracted from my 1995 monthly files. Part are e-mail conversations with certain people who research the Ricks family:

I had not previously considered looking at the 1820 AL census. When I finally got around to doing so, page 496 listed Josiah Rix. There were other surnames (known to be in Edgecombe, Halifax, Nash and Northampton counties, North Carolina) also listed and living in the same general area. Below is a copy of selected census pages:

Marie Burkhead and Emmitt Kilpatrick, eds., Alabama 1820 Census, (Tuscaloosa, Ala.: Willo Publishing Co., 1944), originally pub. by Alabama State Department of Archives and History; Fall Issue 1944.

Guy S. Rix reported Josiah Ricks, born 1785; died 1852, the son of Jacob Ricks, (Benjamin, Isaac, Isaac), p. 32 of Red Book.  He was said to have married (1) Sarah Gandy who evidently died April—May 1852.

Children of Josiah Ricks and Sarah Gandy: [update using research by dmr 5-9-95]

vii. Martha Ricks, b. 1825?; married Jno. S. Higgingbotham in Greene County, AL on 5 Nov. 1826.  [Since a Martha Ricks married in 1826, it is possible the year of birth reported for this child is not correct.]

[If Martha was of age in 1826, she would have been born at least about 1805.  Josiah Ricks was born about 1784—85.  He would be about 21 years old in 1805.  Martha was evidently either his daughter or sister.  The next marriage record is interesting in regard to the Higginbotham family.]

Jefferson REYNOLDS to Lavina RICKS 18 March 1847 [note by Gandrud, "In 1850 she was 22 b. NC"].

There were no records for Josiah Ricks in Shelby County, so evidently he moved from the area early.  It is possible that he moved from NC along with those families that connect with the Ricks family.  The lady that sat in the office stated when I said that Josiah had moved to Greene County early, "Oh, he wanted one of those plantations down there."  I checked the deed record index.  There are lots of records for other surnames being researched.  Did not take time to look over them carefully.  Checked the estate sale of a few looking for Josiah Ricks' name but did not find any record.  Perhaps he is a witness to some some early deeds but did not check.
I met a man who had lots of COLEMAN records.  He promised to send copies of his holdings, and he gave me a name to contact:
Henry & Dorothy BLOCKER of Sylacauga, AL.  Dorothy is an "expert," (on the COLEMAN family) he said.

Your ggg grandfather Josiah Ricks married again before he died, to the following lady.  They did not have children:
p. 26:  Josiah RICKS to Mrs. Ann McPhearson [age 65, born MASS, this note by Mrs Gandrund]
4 June 1839, (p. 230). [This was an aged Josiah, probably in his late 60's also].

This is the family of you ggg grandfather:
The RB reported Josiah Ricks, born 1785; died 1852, the son of Jacob Ricks, (Benjamin, Isaac, Isaac), p. 32 of the RB.  He was said to have married (1) Sarah Gandy who evidently died April—May 1852.

vii. Martha Ricks, b. 1825?; married Jno. S. Higgingbotham in Greene County, AL on 5 Nov. 1826.  [Since a Martha Ricks married in 1826, it is possible the year of birth reported for this child is not correct.  Based on clues in AL, it appears she was one of the oldest children, possibly b. about 1806-7.]
viii. Charity Ricks, born 2 March 1826; died 2 September 1902; married Morgan Sanders 2 January 1845 in Greene County, AL by J. N. Carothers, VDM.

Josiah Ricks (Jacob, Benjamin, William, Isaac, Isaac), his actual lineage, appeared in Shelby Co., AL during the 1820 census period.  He moved from Shelby County, AL to Greene County, AL, before 1830, and was a justice of the peace there for many years [I visited the Shelby County historical society that holds all the old records in 1994, but I did not check for records before 1840.  Shame on me!].  Some records of his life there: [Pauline Jones Gandrud, Alabama Records, Greene Co., AL, Tuscaloosa, AL: Southern Historical Publishing, 1980)

[This from:  Joseph W. Watson, Abstracts of Early Records of Nash Co., NC 1777—1859, (Rocky Mount, NC: Dixie Letter Service, 1963].

Jacob Ricks' father was Benjamin Ricks.  Benjamin Ricks' will proves this.  Benjamin is the only son of William Ricks.  William's 1771 Edgecombe County will also proves this, and he mentions each of Benjamin's children in his will.  Land records, some searched went back to about 1718 and later, and county court records support the findings that William came to NC about 1718-20.  He married Ester Kirby about 1722.  Other information and proof will appear in my publication.
This is brief, but they are the facts as determined by a thorough review of available records.  Mrs. Martha Ricks Bond of Knoxville collaborated with me on much of the early research, and I provide for her a copy of this letter.
Your correct lineage is as follows (I have not researched from Robert F. Ricks to you, so I take the information forward of Josiah Ricks as being credible):

Clyde W. Ricks, (Marion Griffin, Clyde, William Henderson, Robert F., Josiah, Jacob, Benjamin, William, Isaac, Isaac).
You asked where you might send new information.  I do not have plans to take my research any further than the corrections necessary, as in your family's case.  My goal is to devote one large chapter to corrections of early mis-linked families.  There are several so far, and it is beyond the scope of my plan to include updated material on any line by my own.  If that plan happens to change I will have lots of work ahead of me, I am sure.
If you have any information, family history, or documents that would enhance your family history in the early years, I would like to review it for possible use.  I will also appreciate your comments on the above brief.
Thanks for your time and interest, Cappy.  I look forward to your reply. Sincerely,  Don Ricks.

It was strange that Cappy and I had exchanged notes last year.  I sent a message to about a dozen Ricks people with CompuServe addresses, asking for information.  Cappy answered first.  He owns a large farm outside Houston-commutes 150 miles several times a week selling real estate.  Anyway, following my research in AL on Josiah Ricks, I somehow recalled that his family came out of AL.  He had told me that he was in the [Red Book], but at that time I did not have the book you loaned me.
I again asked him to repeat the page number containing his family lineage.  After reviewing the entry, I realized that he came from the Josiah Ricks family!  Small world, indeed.  You noticed, I am sure, the copyright statement in the message I sent him.  After reading the message again, that entry appears so unnecessary and cold.
<<My grandfather, Tillman Perry Ricks (1855-1944) came to Texas in a hurry.>> Thanks for that address.  I will write to her.  Her grandfather was born in Neshoba County, not known for Ricks records.  The counties to the west, Leake-Madison and Yazoo, do contain Ricks history.  It might be interesting to obtain her material.
The census index books would be "nice" to have but expensive, and they are readily available at the libraries.  For that reason I haven't purchased them.
<<Browsing in the CIS genealogy forum library, I came across a gedcom uploaded by someone who had RICKS, MENDENHALL and BATTLE in their line so I dl'ed it.  She has Gwen and Jonas in there so I thought you might be interested in what she has.  Of course, there is the standard mess with the first 3 Isaac guys, and I don't know her line well enough to be able to tell if its accurate.  Thought you might want to correspond with her or see the gedcom.  I can make a disk and bring it to you when I come next Sunday if  you want it.  Its a pretty big file to dl ($$ ya know) if you don't have to do it.  I sent her an email today, but so far have not had a reply; will let you know what she says.>> This was in a Jan 95 message.  Did you ever receive a rely from this lady?  I'd like to correspond with her.

There was no CATLETT, but there is a record on Marmaduke RICKS and Nancy FINCH:
