Comments: I found Martha Ricks Bond's contribution, at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/1948/mrb.htm, fascinating. I do want to make a correction, however. My mother's father, Melvin Byron Ricks, died in 1964 in Anchorage, Alaska when I was 11 years old. I remember vividly a passage from a letter to my mother in which he told how the floor of his hotel room, no doubt covered with his bibliographical research about early Alaska, came up to hit him in the face repeatedly. This was the great Anchorage Earthquake of March 27, 1964.

Comments: Just found your page, 7-28-00, my family is from Va...the Roanoke, Culpepper..area as I recall. They moved to Phila in the 1915 period...I do know that my grandmother, Bessie Ricks was cited as a heroine during the Great Influenza Epidemic when they lived on Dicks Ave in SW Phila. It was in the newspaper of the day. I was born in 1943 and raised in Phila...The fascinating thing growing up was that we were the only white Ricks in Phila and the other Ricks were all black. When I moved to Delaware in the 70's it was the same...any leads I might pursue...Richard
