American Model Builders 804 Strong Depot SR&RL $59.95 A very good laser cut kit with peel and stick parts. The cupola is somewhat squat and should be taller. Some modelers have added 1/16th strip wood under the cupola to raise its height and give it a taller, thinner look. The designer didn’t attempt the distinctive trim under the cupola’s roof eaves. The kit goes together easily except for the bay window, which is manageable if you take it slow. Banta Modelworks (Bill Banta) http://www.bantamodelworks.com/ SR&RL Phillips Depot $74.95 A very well engineered laser cut kit with peaal and stick parts that goes together easily. The windows and trim are cut without regard to the grain so the parts need to be sealed to hide the grain. The roofing supplied represents the roof after abandonment. The white signs will need replacement with blue with white lettering. Brick Price Forney Etching** Not based on a C&D Model Engineering (Chuck
Redfield and Doug Mehring)
All C&D kits have high quality castings, are highly detailed, and are easy to put together. SR&RL 24' box car #55 $29.95 SR&RL RPO #8 $59.95 SR&RL Stock Car #460 $32.95 SR&RL 24' tool car $29.95 W&Q caboose $32.95 Passenger Car Railings $11.95 The

Structures: All the kits below except Sanders tank are laser cut wood kits. The Cardinal kits came out before the advent of self-stick components so there may a lot of tedious gluing of window pieces to deal with. The Kingfield kits below are based on Jensen plans and are quite accurate. SR&RL Kingfield Covered Depot $79.95 The long platform on this kit was made with the individual boards scribed against the grain so one has to either seal the wood and paint, thus negating the effect of using real wood, or replace the whole platform. Otherwise the kit is a real eye catcher. SR&RL Kingfield Car Shop $39.95 SR&RL Kingfield wood/tool shed $29.95 Briefly advertised as a section house. SR&RL Kingfield Powder House SR&RL Madrid Watertank $29.95 SR&RL Sanders Watertank $39.95 High quality resin castings. Getting a good fit at the corners takes a bit of time but the result is well worth the effort. This is a beautiful, accurate kit of this classic structure. Rolling stock: The car siding that Cardinal was able to produce is the finest to ever be offered in the HOn24/30 market and the cast on details and decals by Rail Graphics make these “must haves” for all HOn30 modelers. Unfortunately, the cars were widened to a non-prototypical width under the, in my opinion mistaken, assumption that HOn30 modelers wanted wider cars. If you can live with the extra six inches build them as is and enjoy. Some modelers may want to cut down the ends, roof, and underbody of the boxcars to narrow the cars. B&SR Boxcar 56 SR&RL Box car 121-145 SR&RL Box car 126-157 SR&RL Laconia Passenger Car Nice siding and ends but too short, roof doesn’t have the correct taper at the ends, and the roof is a solid casting so that the clerestory windows don’t allow light to show through. Still a nice looking car. The dairy car is a bit too long for 65 and too short for 509 and like other Cardinal kits it is 6” too wide. Still a great kit. Chris Cardinal sold his kit business to Darryl Slezynski of Portland Locomotive Works who is slowly bringing out improved versions of most of these kits. PLW’s versions of the structure kits have all self-stick materials so that the construction is much easier, especially of the multi-part windows. Another significant difference is that Chris provided trim overlays that are all one piece so that some pieces are always cut against the grain, while PLW provides individual pieces of trim with the grain properly aligned. David M. HoffmanSRRL-3 SR&RL Rail Bus #3 $110 An earlier version came with a noisy NWSL flea unit. The latest version is quieter and runs smoothly with 37/1 gearing making it capable of very slow speeds. SRRL-BVT SR&RL Baggage Van Trailer $20 HOn30-LB-2 F&M Log Bunks $16 pair HOn30-PT-3 SR&RL Passenger Trucks $10 pair The passenger trucks are like fine jewelry but are tricky to assemble. The axle holes are slightly off center. Make sure that the axles are perpendicular to the track. Sometimes it is necessary to bend out the ends of the side frames to allow for free rotation of the wheel sets. The brake hangers may need to be bent down or removed under some cars. Fine
Scale Miniatures FSM 120 Two Stall Roundhouse ** This kit somewhat resembles the SR&RL Rangeley engine house in overall proportion and door type. The siding is wrong, the Rangeley EH had claps and this kit combines upright wainscoting at the bottom with claps above. I had one of these and sold it when the prices skyrocketed after realizing that the only parts that are difficult to scratch build are the doors and smoke jacks. FSM lovers who are also into the two-footers will want this kit. Full review in RMC October 1974. FSM 175 Narrow Gauge Car Shed ** Some have used it for small engine shed like the Kennebec Central engine house. Flying Zoo ** (Sugiyama) SR&RL #10 $229.99 Funaro & Camerlengo All F&C kits have instructions that lead me to wonder if the manufacturer ever builds the kits. This is most obvious with the cabooses. The designer misinterpreted a measurement line in the plans and added two overly deep center beams. The beams should all be flush with the sides of the car. Instead they project below the sides. Had the manufacturer built a car he would have noticed that it was impossible to put the crossbeams for the queen posts in place unless the center beams are removed. The bolsters and under body of all the cars will need manipulation to get the cars to sit at the correct height and portions of the cast frame will need to be removed to clear the wheels. All the kits come with very good decals. 279-5031 SR&RL long caboose 551 $24.95 279-6201 SR&RL short caboose 556 $24.99 Other than the problem with the center beams mentioned above, both cabooses are accurate and can be built into fine models. I remove the center beams by scribing them at the base and snapping them off and then replace them with appropriate size styrene. Use NJ International freight ladders part # ?? for the end ladders and replace the railings and end beams with brass parts from John Spelce or C&D. You will also need hand grabs of various sizes and shapes that don't come with the kit. 279-5041 SR&RL Boxcar $29.95 2 kits This kit appears to be based on the February 1968 SR&RL boxcar article in RMC. The car isn't a specific prototype and the roof angle is sharp for a SR&RL car. It is still a decent model and is fine for the generic Maine two-foot road. Drilling the holes for the ladder rungs is a bear as there are no dimples to start the drill in. I shave off the resin ladder boards with a Micro-Mark surface detail remover and replace them with Grandt or Details West ladders. 279-6191 SR&RL Boxcar series 121-145 $29.99 for 2 kits This kit is a more accurate version of a typical SR&RL car. The cast on hardware is very nice. All of the tolerances are loose, for example the sides may be a bit thick in some spots or the roof overhang may be too deep in some areas. Some of these things can be corrected while others you just have to live with. One can easily scribe the resin roof to represent the correct metal panels and a roof walk of unpainted, real wood can replace the cast resin parts that are a bit too thick. I shave off the resin ladder boards with a Micro-Mark surface detail remover and replace them with Grandt or Details West ladders. 279-6211 SR&RL Flatcar $26.99 for 2 kits The designers used the oversize Grandt stake pockets.

Based on Bob Hayden’s classic February 1975 Railroad Model Craftsman article, it doesn't match any one depot. Caution: The many otherwise superb lead castings in the kits are breaking down and have white lead dust on them. They need to be washed well or no paint will stay on for long and proper safety precautions should be observed. The windows and doors have no lip to cover the edges of the openings in the walls, so the openings must be cut perfectly, a nearly impossible feat. I'd throw out the windows and use Grandt 5282. For an even better look replace the windows with the laser cut windows from PLW. The doorways can be improved by adding wood or plastic strip for trim. The instructions are 2 pages of "now add the shingles" with few suggestions on how to do things. However, the full size plans are fine. The kit looks much better if you make it as long as the wood material supplied will allow, rather than cutting it off to the size of one 40' passenger car as suggested in the instructions. The best part of the kit, and the one thing that makes it worth picking up if you can find one cheaply, is the sheet of depot signs which includes signs for many of the depots on the SR&RL. Though paper, the signs look like real porcelain signs. Other than for the signs, I'd pass on this kit as it is almost as easy to build one from scratch using Hayden's article. Kennebunk Models ** (Don Miller)http://home.maine.rr.com/kmpublish/ Sadly, Don Miller died in mid-2003 and it is still uncertain whether his business will be continued by others. Check www.trainandtrooper.com to see what’s in stock. In a very short time Don Miller created the largest ever selection of HO scale Maine 2 foot kits. He was a fine modeler that built some very nice masters for many unique kits. Many of the rolling stock kits are copies of brass pieces once made by Sango or The Car Works with extra parts added that improve on the flat etched parts. He produced many resin versions of other manufacturer’s kits. In this very small market it isn’t helpful to manufacturers to have someone produce a similar looking kit while they are still selling the original. However, much of his work was unique and if you want a fast, easy kit they should suit you. The casting quality varies and some kits I’ve seen have far too many bubble holes. I don’t believe that Miller used a vacuum to remove bubbles in the casting process. The holes are easy enough to fill on the trim and even on the clapboard parts but are very difficult to fill on the shingled parts. On these kits I never use a black wash to bring out the details as the wash also brings out all the tiny bubbles. The resin quality isn’t as good as other manufacturers and appears to be hand mixed so it is sometimes unstable. I have bought kits that had parts that have actually shriveled into unrecognizable lumps in the boxes. I have had to return 4 kits out of 12 purchased. Since Kennebunk Models is no longer producing kits so there is no chance of getting a replacement kit if you need one. Therefore, only buy one of these kits if you can check the parts first or buy from a seller that allows returns. Painting the kits to look like real wood is difficult, especially the shingled kits. If there is a laser cut wood version of the same structure I always go for the real wood kit, especially when I know that the wood version was the first to hit the market. Final warning: the resin parts cannot handle any heat above normal human comfort levels. I placed one kit on the top of my TV for a few minutes and the walls melted. Another kit warped from a 60 watt bulb placed one foot away during a photo shoot. KM-01 SR&RL Madrid Water Station $27.95 KM-02 SR&RL Farmington Water Crane (old) $20.95 KM-03 SR&RL Kingfield Hydrant House $18.95 The hydrant house is a challenge to scratch build due to its small size. Unfortunately this casting has a double door and not the correct single door. From the end it looks fine. KM-04 SR&RL Phillips Hose House $18.95 The hose house is tricky because one must align six sides and glue while trying to keep the hexagon even. It’s worth the effort as this is a very neat structure and one that is hard to build from scratch. There was a similar hose house by the tracks that came around the toothpick mill at Strong. If this kit is ever reissued it would be better as a one-piece casting. KM-05 SR&RL Phillips Water Crane (enclosed) $20.95 KM-06 SR&SL New

$99.95 Apparently copies of the HetchHetchy Kingfield window with thicker mullions. As noted many of the rolling stock kits listed below are copies of Sango kits. In many ways they are improvements on the Sango brass kits. They are much lighter than the brass, a real plus with the little locos, and the cars have more of a three-dimensional look than the original brass cars. The original Sango flat etched railings are replaced with John Spelce’s fine, cast brass railings. The trucks that come with the passenger cars and cabooses are resin copies of the Sango trucks but are pre-assembled and roll very well. I question how long the soft resin axle holes will last under regular use but I’ve not heard from anyone that they’ve had the trucks wear out. KMC-553 SR&RL

The roof pieces of both the main tank and the cupola have an overhang that is much too big. The spout supplied with the kit is an O scale part. $5 Very basic, generic kits with strip wood, Grandt details and wire. The boxcar’s roof angle is too steep for a Maine road. Sandy River Carshops (Stephen Boothroyd) PO Box 6395 Watertown NY 13601 SRC kits now sold by Stephen Boothroyd were designed and originally sold by Peter Barney with plastic window and door castings from HetchHetchy and metal castings from Portland Products. All SRC kits have sketchy instructions, a set of plans that are not always accurate, uncut wood parts, and the basic details one would gather to scratch build a model. The plans are sometimes over or undersized and should be used for reference and not for taking measurements. As the HetchHetchy plastic door and window castings ran out some of the structure kits were redesigned to use less accurate Grandt parts. None of the kits come with lettering. Currently Available: HO B17 SR&RL Phillips water crane $19.95 HO B18 SR&RL Farmington water crane $19.95 The water crane castings are nice brass pieces. I like the flats and rack cars as there is nothing like wood to represent wood. However the stake pockets are the oversized Grandt parts traditionally used on HOn30 flats. One can upgrade the flats greatly by adding the scale size stake pockets available from C&D Model Engineering. No longer available: HO 22 B&SR Tank Car #22 This is the best model of tank 22 among the 3 produced. The tank is an etched brass piece with brass domes, ends and details from Portland Products. HO B1 SR&RL Madrid freight house The kit I have came with oversized Grandt 5031 windows. Some earlier kits have the correct, smaller HetchHetchy 6/6 windows. HO B2 SR&RL Sanders Depot Look for the earlier kit with the smaller HetchHetchy windows or replace with the new Grandt 5282. HO B3 WW&F Coopers Mills water tank The window and door castings aren't accurate but can be modified if you want a more accurate kit. HO B4 WW&F Whitefield MOW Shed This kit comes with clapboard siding but the shed was shingled. HO B5 New England Creamery at Strong. ME The windows in the creamery kit are too tall, and the plan was drawn to match the window castings, a shame since the right size 30X62” windows were then and are now available as Grandt part #5215. A good look at the photos that come with the kit will show how to locate the correct size windows. The roofing supplied is copper colored, embossed paper that I found difficult to use and there wasn't enough of it in the kit to cover the whole roof. I'd replace it with BIS/Crow River ribbed-seem roofing. HO B9 WW&F Weeks Mills Freight House HO B16 Kennebec Central Randolph Enginehouse HO B?? SR&RL Strong Freight House The following notes are from Craig Stedman: “According to Steve Boothroyd there were 6 of this item produced, (Steve built one of them),the other 5 were sold.
