Foram concedidas ainda duas premiaçoes/homenagens: "The Hoofer Award", para Gregory Hines, e "The Tap Preservation Award", para Marda Kirn e o "NY Committee To Celebrate National Tap Dance Day". The Old Tap and the New Team Up With Affection" (autora: Jennifer Dunning) Tap, like the rest of the world, has changed since the days of the great solo dancers. That was one message of "Tap City," the central program of the inspired New York City Tap Festival, on Thursday night at the Duke on 42nd Street. Another message was that this peculiarly American, peculiarly lovable art form is still a lot of fun to watch and even, occasionally, as exalted as those earlier tapsters, though in a different way. That kind of exaltation was present in "Just You, Just Me," an improvisational duet performed by the great Jimmy Slyde and Sarah Petronio, a dream of a dancer though less well known than the redoubtable Mr. Slyde. Ms. Petronio has the relaxed and worldly chic of an American transplant to Paris, where she has taught new generations of tap performers. Mr. Slyde is a product of the once-traditional nightclub, burlesque and big-band route. The two have performed together in Europe, and their familiarity shows. One of the great pleasures of their number was the ease with which they interacted and danced apart, like two old friends. Even more, each moves with a similar delicacy and wit. Mr. Slyde's famous slides looked almost airborne, so softly did his feet glide across the floor. Ms. Petronio achieved a similar effect through the subtlety and intricacy of her rhythms. There was air beneath her feet, too. There was a Dickensian complexity to the magically wayward conversation between the feet of Brenda Bufalino and the saxophone playing of Andy Laster in "Mingus Medley." Gregory Hines performed an endearing tap-and-talk routine that included vaudeville-style jokes and a riff on returning to the stage as a creaky old-timer. Gleaming front and center was a silver tap shoe that Mr. Hines, a most generous promoter of the form, had just been given as the first recipient of the New York City Tap Festival Hoofer Award. Savion Glover joined Mr. Hines for an unscheduled duet, notable not only for the ways Mr. Glover's wild-genius intensity played off Mr. Hines's more easy-going style, but also for their infectious delight in each other. That camaraderie was one of the happiest aspects of the evening, which also included a breeze-blown solo by Lynn Dally, a charming number by Marion Coles and the Silver Belles and genial appearances by Tony Waag, who also produced the festival. The program also included performances by the Vanaver Caravan, the American Tap Dance Orchestra, Jeannie Hill and Billy Siegenfeld, the young O'D n' Tap quartet , Max Pollak, Ann Kilkelly, and the tray-spinning Kurt Albert and Klaus Bleis, the Siegfried and Roy of tap. The band also included Frank Kimbrough (piano), Ben Allison (bass) and Eddie Ornowski (drums). "Sing it, Mama," Mr. Glover called out as Yvette Glover belted out a song. "Dance, baby," she called as her son danced. It was that kind of night.
