1. One paragraph summary of the key idea summarizing the major idea of the section. The major idea of this section is faith, and what it is and how different people view it, and different people's definitions of it. Faith is normally viewed very differently, and even has different meanings in different groups of people. The secular definition of faith is complete trust, which means that you have full trust in something and are almost certain that it will happen as you see it. The religious definition, on the other hand, is "an intellectual asset to a loving God and his revelations." This definition has alot more to do about having trust in God, and using faith as a way to understand God and further your relationshipe with him. Faith is described as the Golden Way in the chapter, a perfect middle between the reason but no belief of nihilsm and the belief but no reason of fundamentalism. My personal definition of faith is a way for human's to explain what we do not know.
2. List and explain three of the most important ideas you want to remember from this week. 1. THe first idea that I have chosen is the movie we watched in class, "The Mission." I think that this movie really showed me alot about the practicality of faith, and that two different people can make 2 completely different decisions and have them still both be faithful decisions. The idea about wheter cutting off an arm to save the body as the case might have been is moral also fascinated me. Another thing that the movie showed me was on the concept of forgiveness, and I really want to remember about Rodrigo's road to forgiveness and how it came about.
2.The second idea that I have chosen to write about it is the Andy Griffith Show episode, Mr. Mcbeevee. I think that this is episode really showed me a view of faith that I had not seen much before, a belief in a person so great that they will believe even the completely unbelievable. I think that Andy shows alot of faith to be able to tell his son that he believes him, and I think that this faith has a part in any father son relationship. Andy really defines and emphasizes faith in this episode, and he also teaches Opie, his son, alot about keeping faith and trusting in others.
3. The third idea I have chosen for the section is the idea on faith that Dick Hoyt represents. I think that this is a great story on the impact the love of a father can have on a person's lifes. Dick Hoyt was able to overcome his initial being out of shape to run in many marathons and help his son feel like he is not disabled. He does all of this to help his son, and his good deed is rewarded with his life being saved. I think the Dick Hotyt story can teach everyone about inner stregth and the impact that it can have on people's lifes.
