Journal: Week 1

1. One paragraph summary of the key idea summarizing the major idea of the section.
Some of the major ideas we studied this week we Socrates quote "An unexamined life is not worth living", the five foundational lessons, and the human condition. I learned that the human condition is actaully in ignorance, and that we need to work to come into knowledge. The quote about the unexamined life tells us to question things, and that we should not just accept that at their face value. We also will find that God is there in all things with us,and he can help us through the bad times. If we reflect on our mistakes and wrongdoings, we can possibly learn from them, while if we just let them go, we most likely will not be able to fix our mistakes, and we might even make the same mistakes again. The five foundational lessons were taught because they show us that we are biased, and even if our actions do not seem to effect ourselves or others, they actually do.

2. List and explain three of the most important ideas you want to remember from this week.
1. The first idea I learened was about Plato's "Allegory of the Cave," which is about how human beings are normally kept in the dark, until they can come out and actually use reasoning. Human beings need to use their intellect and their soul to be able to live fully. Plato's allegory of the shadows seeming like reality is like how we can view things that are false as true, and it helps us a lot to actually reason our way through tings.

2. Another key idea was the story of Icharus and Daedalus. The story gives us a good lesson on staying focuesed, and just because we are having fun does not mean that nothing can go wrong. It also is a helpful lesson to use while driving, because we need to be able to focus on the road, and not get distracted even if we have friends in the car, or if we are playing the music loud and having fun.
3. The third key idea i learned was on the story of The Three Blind Elephants. It really taught me that even though it seems that there is only one truth, sometimes even conflicting views can both be true. We only can get the full truth when we take into accountall of the views, and then we can get the most accurate view. I think this could really come into effects in politics, when sometimes neither party's views are corret, but a combination of the views could do the most good.

3. One image that reminds you of key ideas.

4. One question you should keep with you to ponder. What Makes a ship rudderless? If you focus on evil are you a ship with a rudder, or do you have to focus on good?
