Steven Earl Johnson is the oldest child of Duke Earl and Josephine Johnson. Duke and Jo had a very abusive marriage and when Steve was 5 years old he tried to kill his father because he beat up his mother. This caused his parents to put him and his baby brother, Billy, in an orphanage. Billy was adopted by Camille and Harper Deveraux soon after, Steve was never adopted and stayed in the orphanage until he was a teenager.

Kayla Caroline Brady Deveraux Johnson (type that 5 times really fast) is the 3 child of Shawn and Caroline Brady. She grew up living above the Brady Fish Market in Salem.

Steve went into the Merchant Marines and was best friends with Bo Brady. Their friendship ended when Bo and Steve got into a fight over a girl, Britta Englund, and Bo knifed out Steve’s eye. Steve came to Salem several years later to do some dodgy work for Victor Kiriakis and to torment Bo whom he still held a grudge over.

Kayla came to Salem a year after Steve because a stalker had scared her out of her home in Clevland. (The stalker was Steve, he was paid to do this.) She started up the Riverfront Emergency Center. She is a nurse.

Steve bugged Kayla quite a bit in the beginning as he was still being paid by Kiriakis to keep an eye on Kayla. He was always around her. She didn’t like it. But Steve started to have feelings for Kayla and told Victor he didn’t want to work for him anymore. Kayla started to develop feelings for Steve, but it would be several more months before either one would show these feelings.

When Adrienne came to Salem she made friends with Kayla immedaitely. Steve, however didn’t like her at all. Adrienne was following Steve around and was always in the way, especially when he and Kayla wanted to be alone. Steve finally pushed her to tell him what her deal was and she revealed that she was Steve’s sister, born after they’d sent him and Billy away.

Steve and Adrienne had a tense relationship for a while until Steve’s mother showed up in Salem badly beaten, having left their father. Duke found her, however and she went to a battered women’s shelter. When Duke came to Adrienne’s apartment to ask Adrienne where Jo was, she refused to tell him and he became violent and raped her. Steve walked in just as Adrienne shot Duke. She didn’t remember any of the incident so Steve took the blame when the police came and found Duke dead. Steve was about to be sentenced for murder when Adrienne remembered what he did and confessed. The charges were dropped and it was ruled self defense.

Kayla was trying to get Steve to open up, but he wouldn’t. She finally told him she loved him only to have him tell her to leave him alone. She did. Steve was alone with his thoughts and realized he loved Kayla too and needed to tell her. He went to her loft and knocked on the door. A man answered the door, an old friend of Kayla’s. Jack Deveraux. He told Steve Kayla was in the shower. Steve left.

Steve and Kayla got much closer over the next few months, even after Jack confessed he was in love with Kayla. It didn’t matter though cause she loved Steve. So when Steve began pushing her away Kayla was heartbroken.

Steve had recently discovered that Jack Deveraux was his brother. Jack was dying and Steve thought the only thing that would keep him alive was Kayla. Even though Steve loved Kayla he felt Jack could give her a better life.

Kayla married Jack later that summer. They never slept together however. Jack was still sick at the beginning of the marriage and then Kayla became mysteriously ill once Jack got better.

Steve had discovered that Kayla was being poisoned and kidnapped her from Jack’s house. Once he nursed her back to health they resumed their old relationship. When Kayla got angry with Steve because he was telling her to go back to Jack Steve finally told her Jack was Billy. Kayla agreed to stay married to Jack until he won the position of State Assemblyman, therefore giving him something other then her to live for.

Jack discovered Steve and Kayla were having an affair and became furious, he raped Kayla. Kayla went to Steve who took her to a cabin in the mountains. When Steve wanted to get intimate Kayla backed away. Steve asked her what was wrong and after much pursuasion she finally told him Jack had raped her. While Steve went outside to get some firewood one of Jack’s men beat Steve up and left him for dead hanging off a cliff. Jack then took Kayla back to her loft and held her as a prisioner.

Steve eventually recovered and found Kayla on the roof of the loft. Jack found them too and Steve and Jack fought violently. Jack fell off the roof. In the hospital it was revealed Jack would need a kidney transplant. Steve offered his kidney and everyone was amazed to see it was a perfect match.

Kayla asked Jack for a divorce and pressed rape charges against him. Jack refused to give Kayla a divorce, even after she’d moved into the loft with Steve. Jack pled guilty to a lesser charge of assult to avoid any negative publicity.

Kayla was attacked by the Riverfront Knifer and caught in an explosion. This caused her to lose her hearing. The trauma of everything she’d been through in the past few months caused her to lose her speech. Steve and Kayla learned to communicate through sign language. When it was revealed that the Riverfront Knifer was Harper Deveraux Jack granted Kayla the divorce, feeling they’d all done enough damage to each other. Jack later discovered he was Billy Johnson, but refused to accept the Johnsons as family.

Steve and Kayla were married a month later in July of 1988. Kayla had regained her hearing after having surgery. Her speech returned as she was saying her wedding vows. They honeymooned in the Orient where they found an abandoned deaf boy and brought him back to Salem to search for his parents. After the boy, Benji’s, mother was killed they discovered that his father was Stefano DiMera. They gave Benji to his grandfather, his mother’s father, to take care of him after he vowed he could protect Benji from Stefano.

Steve found a badly burned man one day and hid him from the authorities. Once he told Kayla about the man they helped him reclaim his life. As payment the man gave Steve and Kayla his old mansion. In the mansion Kayla found a diary from the Civil War times and read the story of Emily Matthews who’d fallen in love with Gideon, a rebel officer.

Steve went undercover to help his best friend Marcus Hunter discover who killed his parents. Steve had to have plastic surgery and a glass eye put in to disguise himself. After they’d helped Marcus a woman came to Salem looking for Steve, claiming to be an old friend of his. She needed him to help her find a key. The woman, Marina Tuscano, turned out to be Steve’s dead ex-wife from many many years ago. Steve thought she died when they fought on a boat and she fell overboard. He helped her find the key so she would divorce him, but Kayla was already angry at Steve and she moved out of their house. During this time Kayla found out she was pregnant. While Steve was helping Marina he got into a fight and his eye was punched out. He had to put the patch back on.

Marina was murdered and the search for her murderer went on for months. Steve and Kayla reconciled and prepared to remarry before the birth of their baby. Before they could be married, however, Kayla was arrested for Marina’s murder. While in prison Kayla gave birth to Stephanie Kay Johnson.

Steve took care of Stephanie while Kayla was in jail and hired a nanny. The nanny however kidnapped Stephanie. Kayla broke out of jail and went with Steve to Australia to get Stephanie. During this time it was revealed that Marina’s sister, Isabella Tuscano, accidently killed Marina. Kayla was free.

Kayla and Steve married again in the summer of 1990 but it was sort lived. Steve had been caught in an explosion meant for Bo. In the hospital he recovered, but Lawrence Alamain had some evil doctor put poison in Steve’s IV. Steve died. At his funeral his casket was switched with an empty one.
