Freising, Germany
Freising, Germany is a small town that was close to the place where we had set up our medieval training encampment. These towers and red roofs were typical of the towns in this Bavarian area. After a good nights sleep we explored Freising. In the town of Freising there was was an open market where many fresh foods items as well as flowers could be purchased. We enjoyed stopping for a spot of breakfast at a sidewalk cafe while making our plans for the days events and travels. |
We arrived at dusk so trying to set the tents up was going to seem near impossible. Our tent was a small typical American dome tent that went up easy. However Stacy and Lloyd had a more traditional renaissance style tent with the big heavy wooden poles and had it not been for Brian's magic candle (Flashlight) we would have had to wait until morning to pitch it. The camp dancers has their bard music in the back ground as I heard the phrase "nuggets" more than once as we toiled to get things ready. Sleep came easy this first night. Everything felt right with me or I was just too tired to notice anything that wasn't right. |
This is me the next morning in one of two costumes I had sewn prior to my arrival in Germany. |
This is Lloyd, my son in law. Stacy and he live in Germany and have made many friends in this medieval world. Stacy publishes their newsletter and sews clothing for this period dress. Lloyd likes to participate in fighting while Stacy encourages him from the sides. |
This is the queen for the Encampment. She was very friendly and participated in many of the events herself. It really surprised me in regards to her archery skills. |
The days activities included archery which I watched with great interest since not only did they shoot regular target but animal target as well... no animals harmed of course as the targets were painted dragons, wolves etc. The event that I participated in was reverse thievery where we were to dispose of our talismans on the opposing team without their knowledge. I had a great skill in this area... scary huh? Maybe it was because they wanted to trust Stacy's Mom or maybe I looked innocent instead of worldly. I would be working on worldly... |
While the queen takes time to strike a pose for me I also could see the workers moving belongings to their tents. The camp seemed to be always busy with everything from knife and axe throwing to late night story telling as a lying contest would be an evening highlight. Brian and I had made plans to visit Dachau in the afternoon. This visit proved to be more than I had anticipated and left me drained emotionally. I felt so confused upon our return to camp. I wanted to drink heavily. | ||
When going from happy and carefree to the past history of the concentration camp and then back to the carefree camp of music and lighthearted games had set me on an emotional roller coaster. I didn't know what to feel anymore. I wanted to relax and have fun but first I needed a good cry and set off by myself to try and figure things out. When I returned to camp I listened to the storytelling with Stacy and clapped loudly for the best liar. Although knowing my real mood perhaps I was the best liar of all. | This last night passed quickly and the morning would show the results of the nights events as most were sleeping late into the morning. A few early risers were starting to break camp. We went for breakfast at McDonalds (not exactly medieval but what I needed). It was time for 1999 again. |
