Fairy Tale Road

Leaving Hanau and headed towards Kassel; Brian and I set out down the Fairytale Road.  Our first stop was to be at the Bruder Grimm Museum in Kassel where I found my first disappointment. The museum was closed for renovations and wouldn't open until the following week unfortunately.

With no place to go but up from here we headed to Sababurg this is said to be the setting of Sleeping Beauty Castle.  Following the brick path up the hill and entering the garden area made me feel like I was stepping into a fairytale. This was no disappointment and I was in awe of the beauty and sweet smell of the garden. The ivy was thick on the walls with roses blossoming in the garden, it was a beautiful arched entrance that took us to the front of the castle.  It was easy to see how this type of environment was the origin of so many fine tales with castles as these as settings.  We decided to have a late lunch here on the garden terrace.

SLEEPING BEAUTY CASTLE

When having lunch we looked at the tops of the turrets and the stone fences and decks that surrounded us, trying to decide where the best photos could be taken from.  We enjoyed our meal and relaxed going over our progress and deciding what our next stop should be.  When we finished eating and going over the camera things as Brian was still teaching me how to adjust the aperture and checking my lens when the German army decided to join us. Noticing a lack of tables for this group of marching men it seemed a good time to vacate and explore the terraces and gardens a bit more.  Not that we felt in danger... just seemed to be a good idea.

The gardens were lovely, decorated with statues and small pools of water.  The flowers were very pretty as I wandered the paths.  I found a little nook off to the side that over looked the hill. I felt so content here as I sat on the bench and felt like a princess myself. I looked at the garden empty of people and imagined children's laughter as they playfully tossed coins in the pool.  It was like a dream that abruptly stopped with Brian asking... Debi are you ready to move on?

I hated to leave but time was passing and we had many miles to travel before reaching Bad Karlshafen in the Weser Valley.

Bad Karlshafen

This was the town I chose to stop for the night at. It had baroque style buildings and a very nice reflection pond at the center of the city.  After finding a place for the night we walked thru the streets and visited the town's information center.  It soon started to sprinkle and we took cover at one of the local business's street cafes.  This cafe had quite the unique awning as it was formed by a tree they had the lower branches cleared off and the ends supported by a frame.  It caught my eye as I am still amazed by it.  We had went inside for coffee and ice cream while the rain went it's course and left us as quickly as it had started.

We drove the streets a bit and around the edges of the village.  It was odd the see towers jutting up from the sides of a mountain.  Which immediately made me think of Repunzel and her hair.  Coming back into town I noticed how perfectly manicured every flower garden was kept.  I loved it. After a good nights sleep, one of the best breakfasts I had was served in the dining area.  A large variety of breads, meats, cheese, and fruits was available.  I developed an appreciation for the soft boiled egg and theirs were perfect. I ate enough to last me as I knew we  had a long day ahead of us.

Next we headed north towards Hamlin

Hamlin

Driving towards Hamlin I had to think of the Pied Piper. The road leading in was lined by some of the tallest trees I had seen in Germany.  In Ohio it wasn't unusual to see trees like these. Although, here where so much of the area had been damaged in war and then replanted, they just didn't have the time to grow to such heights yet.  The truck looked dwarfed by the branches reaching over the road joining in the middle as it forms a natural tunnel. This shady road where the truck will disappear into the greenness of the trees surrounding it was definitely the Pied Piper's path... in my imagination anyhow.   Once upon a time ...
