Arhus Denmark

Entering Arhus I was way too happy to turn the driving duties back over to Brian while I looked at the city and read signs and directions. *sigh* hello Arhus... we're here!

We decided that calling Jan from a gas station would be a good idea and pulled in and contacted Jan by his cell phone. When he said he would be right here quickly he wasn't joking.  While I waited with Stacy and Brian, Brian teased me... asking if I was certain I'd know him.  Well much the same as I knew Brian... by a single photo.  The thing that the photo didn't tell me was his height.  As Jan walked towards us smiling I was definitely surprised.  But it was a good surprise and in a few seconds my second surprise as Jens was there as well as our friend/cabbie for the day.  Leaving our car parked we started on a tornado style trip thru Arhus.  I was turning my head every which way but loose trying to see it all.  They laughed at me a lot as I was so American even when we went to a steak house for lunch and I cut my meat to eat had gave them cause to giggle at me.  But with the right amount of tutoring soon I was eating almost in style.

Jens , to the left, drove us and stayed with us the longer part of the day.  While touring the city Jan showed us his favorite place to relax in the park as we took a stroll at the other end of the park was a miniature city of the older days of Arhus that we would tour.  Before entering the older Arhus Eric, to the right, was able to stop and say hello it was a great meeting and I had so looked forward to meeting my 3 Danish musketeers.  I was surprised that each one appeared to be at least a head taller than me.  I wondered what vitamins they took as children and Jan said they are Viking stock naturally they are tall!

Visiting the deeper inner city we saw many old building this one was a theater with a colorful mosaic on the upper front above the columns.  The stripe tent in the plaza area housed an American Jazz Festival.  It seems that not only do many of the Danes speak perfect English, even much of our slang, but they also appreciate American music.  The sidewalks were streets that people shared with taxis in many places.  This was different and took a bit getting used to.  I constantly was looking over my shoulder worried that a car would come zooming up from behind.  Everyone had such control that it seemed I was the only one worried... seemed I needed to relax a bit.

Walking on we stopped as I took pictures of many buildings and the waterways that circulated through Arhus.  The way the older buildings were butted against newer modern style was extremely noticeable.  This was a city that had not experienced the destruction of war as the German cities had.  To the left you can see the yellow umbrellas at the end.  This is where we rested and drank beer.  This was my first time to drink beer and like it.  The flavor of the beer was very good and I had no idea that it would pack such a wallop to me!
Stacy was sitting on the steps going down to the waters edge relaxing and chatting with new friends as I was enjoying the coolness of the beer.  It became comical to my friends as I had no desire to drink before hand and was now doing a bottoms up before leaving.  When I went to stand and walk to the car I realized how much I consumed, giggling, I thought it would be an interesting evening!

The is the Queen of Denmark's summer house located at Arhus.   One of the best things about visiting Denmark was knowing that my friends would take good care of me and make certain I saw everything that I could in my short visit there.  So when we entered this area where the queen had her summer house I was still feeling my beer from the last stop downtown.  Jens helped out taking pictures here as I wasn't quite myself.

I caught some of the guards off guard though something I would not have had the courage to do had I been totally sober.  We returned to the  car and I relaxed as the places and names became a blur of information as I tried to take everything in.  Catching bits and pieces of it as we stopped at the ferry to check departure times as Copenhagen was on the tour list for the next day.

Later we arrived at Jan's home and moved suitcases in as we would be spending the next few nights here.  I found sleep slowly and woke up early.  Sitting quietly by the window gazing out a silent tear escaping as I knew today would be the little mermaid adventure. My heart ached as I wondered where my true love would be found.
