Harris Homestead 2005 was enjoyable for
all present. The site director is a lovely lady who makes a big
effort to promote the site and the history of the area. She
extended a gracious welcome to us which made for a warm and
friendly weekend. Misses Clara and Molly Mitchell were an
absolute treasure and joy. Jason Rich did an excellent job as
sutler for the event and enjoyed himself immensely. The cooking
and cleaning for our civilian meals was shared by all. The
Saturday evening meal consisted of collard greens, hoe-cake,
butternut squash with butter and sorghum, and a pork shoulder
roasted over the fire. We looked through quite an area to find
forked sticks on which to spit the meat which roasted beautifully
golden brown. On Friday night there was a threat of rain so we
slept underneath an old shed, but the rain skirted around us and
the weekend was beautiful. Present were Martha Eason, Gabi
Mitchell with Clara and Molly, Kris Mattocks, Sharon Eason, Brenda
and Danny Branch, and myself. Anne did a fabulous job as civilian
coordinator.

Until then,
