1789 Church Service

St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Milledgeville, Georgia, 2006

On July 2, 2006, St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Milledgeville, Georgia held a special service to commemorate the anniversary of the Episcopal church in the US breaking away from the Church of England on that date in 1789.

In the photo I am receiving communion in a 19th century challis from Fr. Don Caron of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Milledgeville, GA. This same challis along with some others was buried outside the church grounds before Sherman's troops spent the night inside the church. The men used the pews for firewood and poured molasses down the organ pipes before they left. Anne Buckner-Burgamy
