Ministry To Revive Hang Tuah Medal Award The Hang Tuah Medal Award for child heroes, which was discontinued in 1977, will be revived. Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said the ministry would bring back the award to honour heroes aged 18 years and below who demonstrated the qualities of legendary Malay hero Hang Tuah such as wisdom, leadership, excellence, courage, intelligence, caring, sacrifice and loyalty. The Hang Tuah Medal Award was first presented in 1960 to 16-year-old Mohamad Nor Omar who saved two children, aged 7 and 12 years, from drowning in Sungai Terengganu. During the 17 years of the award before it was withdrawn in 1977, 30 child heroes were honoured. In 1982, a Child Leader Award (Anugerah Tokoh Kanak-Kanak) was introduced which was replaced by the Promising Youth Award (Anugerah Tunas Jaya) in 1991. bernama.com 2 Dec 05

Sixteen Dayak war heroes honoured Sixteen Dayak war heroes, who received gallantry awards for their acts of bravery while serving in the army and police were given a special tribute by the Dayak Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI). They included Awang Raweng and Kanang Langkau. Awang, from Nanga Skrang in Sri Aman Division, was a tracker with a British army when they were ambushed by about 50 communists on May 27, 1951 in Labis, Segamat in Johor. In the ambush, Awang, despite being badly injured, saved the life of a wounded British soldier. For his outstanding bravery, he was awarded the George Cross Medal - the only one given to a local during the Emergency. Sergeant (r) Kanang Langkau, from Julau, was awarded the Pingat Gagah Berani, the nation's second highest gallantry award, for his heroic act in killing three terrorists and seizing a carbine, two hand grenades, 31 bobby traps and eight haversacks during Ops Setia in Sungai Siput, Perak, on June 1, 1979. In another encounter with the terrorists in February 1980 in Tanah Hitam, also in Perak, Kanang was badly injured when the combat intelligence section, which he led, fought in a gun battle with the communists, killing five of them. He received the nation's highest gallantry award, the Sri Pahlawan Gagah Perkasa. nst.com.my 31 Dec 05
Hang Tuah Medal Re-Introduced To Recognise Bravery In Children The Hang Tuah medal for the recognition of bravery of children will be re-introduced this year in conjunction with World Children's Day. Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said the medal, which had been awarded from 1960 to 1963, is being revived to recognise children for their bravery, loyalty, heroism and wisdom, as possessed by the legendary warrior Hang Tuah. Shahrizat said the medal would be awarded to children below 18 who showed their bravery in helping save lives, property and elements of courage when acting during an emergency, disaster, accident or riot. The recipients will receive RM5,000, the medal and an accompanying trophy. bernama.com 21 Mar 06
Brave hearts Unexpected events sometimes provide quite ordinary people with the chance to do extraordinary things. Such was the nature of the fateful incident in Port Dickson last Dec 4, which could have ended tragically if not for Muhammad Firdaus Haris, who jumped into a pool — although he could not swim — to save a four-year-old from drowning. This selfless act of bravery has received the recognition it deserves in the form of the Pingat Hang Tuah. For 23 years, we gave this medal to children who put themselves in harm’s way to save the lives of others. But it was discontinued in 1983. The revival of the award is to be welcomed because there is a need to recognise acts of extraordinary courage by young people. nst.com.my 27 Mar 06

Fight 4 the PJM Web Site “Pingat Jasa Malaysia” can be translated as "The Malaysian Service Medal". The medal was offered at the end of 2004 to the Commonwealth countries who served Malaysia - including Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, the United Kingdom and, never to be forgotten, the Gurkhas. Foreign and Commonwealth medals have to be accepted by The Queen on the advice of the Government of each Commonwealth country involved where she is head of State. After a short period of consultation the Governments of Australia and New Zealand accepted the medal without restriction for their citizens. The British Government, however, announced in the House of Lords that they would refuse the Malaysian medal for British citizens on the basis that the award was contrary to British Medals Policy. In early 2005 intensive lobbying commenced to try and reverse that decision and after a few months the Secretary of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) announced that the FCO had submitted a paper to the Committee on the Grants of Honours, Decorations and Medals (known as the HD Committee which advises The Queen on these matters) asking them to review their policy in respect of foreign awards and the PJM. After several months the HD Committee met on the 7th December 2005 to carry out the review but their recommendation was not announced until a written Ministerial Statement was made in the Commons on the 31 st January 2006 - the day after medals were presented in Australia where the medal can now be proudly worn. The British HD Committee’s recommendation, however, was that British citizens could accept the medal but they would not be allowed to wear it. This astonishing compromise means that The Queen has granted a wearable medal to her Australian and New Zealand citizens, but has refused the right to wear the PJM to her British citizens. fight4thepjm.org |

For the record, at the age of 32 Hazara was awarded the King's Police Medal (KPM) by the British Administration.
