Dorothy Marie Osborne Vickrey Boynton

891-8 (RN1329 ID 1-2-2-1-7-4-5-8) Dorothy Marie Osborne-Vickrey,8 (Oder,7 Mary A. (Wolf),6 Jesse H.,5 Jacob,4 Michael,3 Jacob,2 Michael1 was b. the 9th of May 1934 in Clarita, Oklahoma as the of Oder Ezekiel and Irey(Ira) Dunn Osborne, I was born Dorothy Marie Osborne - named by my older brother Robert. Though I have no recollection at all of the events that changed my life forever, when I was two years old my mother died on January 9, 1936. So I have been told she accompanied my older brothers and sisters to the school Christmas program and when she came home that night she said to my father, "Oder, I am chilled to the bone". She took pneumonia from which she died and the destiny of my life took another path altogether. I was adopted by my daddy's sister Elizabeth and her husband Clefford Floyd Vickrey; thus, my legal name became Dorothy Marie Vickrey. The Vickreys were living in Frederick, Ok., at that time where C.F. was manager of the Dascumb-Daniels Lumber Co. and Elizabeth was bookkeeper of the establishment.

My early memories were of having to play around the lumber yard and in the city park just one block away so the Vickreys could work at the yard. Our social life centered around the Methodist Church and my memories are happy ones. I went to Missionary Society Meetings with mother, as I now called Elizabeth, and played with my younger sister Noreen, whom the Vickreys had also adopted. I remember liking to watch mother sew our clothes - for some reason I have always liked pretty clothes and we had a family project garden at which everyone worked. School began at Lowell Elementary where I twice won the Lions Club medal as an outstanding student. As times were hard and the war coming on, the family moved from North 11th street to 315 Nth 12th which was much closer to school and the lumber yard; this helped Daddy as he had phlebitis as a result of Typhoid Fever when he was younger so walking was hard for him.

Once again, I won a Lion's club medal in 7th grade as an honor student and something great happened, the post-World War II school band was organized and I became a member, playing the flute and twirling the baton. I also won a blue ribbon on my apron that I entered at the county fair. That talent served me well throughout my life. In high school I was more interested in basketball, band and football than grades, but my grades got me into college and my band abilities got me a scholarship as a majorette in the Midwestern University Band. So in 1952 while there I met Louis Boynton, the son of Mr. and Mrs. C.L. Boynton of Quanah, Texas who was a MU football player, and that was the luckiest day of my life. We were married on the 8th of April 1955, in the Methodist Church in Frederick. With our college diplomas in hand, we embarked on professional careers in the education arena.

Life has been good to us professionally as through the years Louis produced two Texas State Championship UIL Track Teams and several individual event State Champions. He had the nation's top ranked high school sprinter in 1978. Health problems following a heart attack in 1981 forced Louis to give up coaching and just retain administrative duties. In the academic area of Speech, Drama and Debate, I had seven UIL State Champions, also. Our daughter Tanya Kym was born in Seymour, Texas and attended school at Wheeler and Lockett before graduating with academic honors from high school in Vernon, Texas. She was active in band, drill team, tennis, speech, journalism and yearbook. She took a Bachelor of Science Degree from Midwestern University in Medical Technology. Kym married John Sosolik and they have one son Seth Sosolik who is the light of our life. We are both presently still with the Vernon School system, Louis as a principal and I as a Computer Science teacher. Retirement is surely in the very near future.
