Year in Review: 2003

Part of my new year's resolution is to organize my pictures so I can get a "year-in-a-glance" view of past events. Here is my first attempt: a compendium of this year's pictures. 2003 brought in just over 10,000 pictures (almost 14GB worth), about the same as 2002 (though occupying more disk space, with the introduction of my S230's 640x480 movie mode).

Below are 59 pictures from the year (unless otherwise noted, shot with my Canon Powershot G2 or S230). Not always the best photographs, not necessarily the most artistically composed, but certainly some of the best memories of the year. Thanks to all of you, friends and family, for making every single one of these possible.

Here's to another year of great experiences and good times!

1/8/2004

2/14/2003, a memorable, if not somewhat unusual, Valentine's Day: dogsledding at Lake Tahoe. The huskies were surprisingly small and lean. I felt sorry for them, making them drag us around!

2/17/2003: Snowmobiling. Loud, polluting, and Cindy almost drove us off a cliff. Otherwise, an interesting experience.

3/23/2003: All spiffed up for the Intel Centrino launch celebration.

4/13/2003: Rollerblading at Shoreline. Yes, one should avoid branches up the rear, and not go skating with camera-happy, unhelpful people like Jeng.

Proof that I survived and was able to roll around somewhat.

4/19/2003: Family portrait at the usual Brookside Gardens. Yes, Chris needs anti-reflective lenses.

4/19/2003: Family portrait with Jeanne's now-husband Matt.

4/27/2003: Kelly Chen concert in San Francisco!

Jeng and I were in front of the Civic Auditorium chatting when Kelly Chen (and her entourage) walked right by us!

5/8/2003: Jeng's latest place of residence, two blocks away from me. As always, Cindy frolics with Pickle.

6/1/2003: Backpacking to Kibbie Lake, Yosemite. The culminating trip of our Sierra Club backpacking class. Fun, even with our orange pooper-scoopers. Mountain House lasagna is mighty fine stuff.

6/11/2003: Volleyball at Intel. I suck. Jeng actually does a pretty good overhand serve.

6/14/2003: Kayaking at Tomales Bay. Always good to have someone along who'll paddle while I take pictures. ;)

6/26/2003: Lunch at the cheap but yummy Vietnamese sandwich place just off Wolfe, in Sunnyvale, for the winners of the baseball pool (friends from work).

6/27-7/6/2003: Roadtrip from Denver to Arches, Salt Lake City, Jackson, and Yellowstone. This is a shot of the White Rim in Canyonlands (6/29/2003), which turned out to be one of my favorite hikes of the trip. Desolate and dry, but stunning geologic formations, amazing panoramic views, and peace and quiet -- we didn't see anyone for the 3 hours we hiked in and hung out at this spot!

6/30/2003: Delicate Arch, Arches National Park. As Jeng will tell you, this is the monument on the Utah license plate. :)

7/2/2003: Grand Teton National Park. As Jeng will tell you, the Grand Teton is the inspiration for the Paramount Pictures logo. :) It is also the source of one of my favorite lines: "The name Grand Tetons means 'Large Teats' in French, which, as one author put it, is what happens when you let French fur trappers name a mountain range." (Lonely Planet Guide to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks)

7/3/2003: The Morning Glory Pool in Yellowstone.

7/5/2003: Sunset at the Great Salt Lake, Utah, as seen from Antelope Island. The sunset is nice, the flies swarming over the carcasses of brine shrimp at the lake shore are not. Still, worth a dip for the experience of floating like a (salted) cork, skimming salt rocks, and generally just getting completely covered in salt powder. Don't some people pay for bath salts? Must be like paying good money to sit in a 105-degree F room doing bikram yoga. Try moving to Maryland for a summer.

7/5/2003: Temple Square in Salt Lake City. Impressive. The missionaries there are chosen by the Living Prophet himself by divine inspiration. It shows. ;)

7/14/2003: Snacks at work. Just trying to maintain my healthy diet. (most of these snacks were actually contributed by my co-workers... who perhaps in turn are trying to maintain their healthy diets... :)

7/17/2003: Craig Barrett, Intel CEO... and us piddly peons, whom I believe He actually thought were student tourists, until I told him we sat on RNB 6th floor... :)

7/23/2003: Jeng and I performing our usual late-night channel measurements.

8/3-8/10/2003: Trip to Whistler, Canada. Here we are hiking toward Whistler Peak (8/4/2003).

8/4/2003: Laying out after the long hike.

8/5/2003: Gravity-assisted alpine mountain biking! (insane and fearless mountain bikers we are not...)

8/6/2003: Butchart Gardens on Vancouver Island.

8/6/2003: A different perspective of us and Butchart Gardens.

8/7/2003: Late night card games. Shortly after this the hotel staff knocked on the door and told us to shut up and go to sleep. "Long2 yan2! Pineapple! AHH!" :)

8/7/2003: Stanley Park.

8/8/2003: Wakeboarding at Green Lake, Whistler.

8/23/2003: Cindy sings, I intently read pin-yin. :P (Cecilia Cheung, "A Star's Wish") Remember to avoid Arirang Karaoke like the plague -- they showed the lyrics on top of videos of Korean pop concerts! It's disconcerting, though somewhat amusing, to be singing love songs to choreographed hip-hop routines. After an hour of shocked disbelief, we went back to World Karaoke.

8/30/2003: Jasmine's wedding!

9/18/2003: Fall 2003 Intel Developer Forum. CTO Pat Gelsinger holds up a sectored antenna laptop and demos the iospan MIMO system. I helped put together the sectored system hardware, wrote the software (after Robbie taught me something about Windows programming), and prepped the iospan system for IDF. Many others helped with the simulations and groundwork to make the sectored system happen, and of course iospan spent several years to build their system. Great team effort all around to make these demos happen!

9/21/2003: Jeanne's wedding!

9/28/2003: Phillip's wedding! (this picture taken with Karen's camera)

10/11/2003: The Blue Angels, part of Fleet Week in San Francisco.

10/17/2003: UCLA, while there for a class on OFDM.

10/24/2003: Under the Congress Street Bridge, Austin, Texas, watching the swarms of bats who live there. (this picture taken with Kirk's Nikon D100)

11/1/2003: Cindy at the Jelly Belly Factory.

11/22/2003: Choi's All-American Tae Kwon Do Open 2003. After over four years of slacking off, I'm finally getting back into TKD with the Stanford TKD Club! (Stanford's excellent head instructor, Master Ghormley, is in the background, fourth from left, with the shaved head) Shown is one of the "Legendary Masters" performing a side kick through many boards.

11/28/2003: Thanksgiving in SF. Ghirardelli Square's tree-lighting ceremony.

11/28/2003: Union Square Macy's.

11/28/2003: St. Peter and Paul Church.

11/28/2003: A view of downtown from Coit Tower.

12/14/2003: Monarch butterflies in Santa Cruz. Natural Bridges State Beach has nice docent-led tours, but because of the warmer weather, twice as many butterflies were at Lighthouse Field State Beach when we went.

12/16/2003: Cindy, Michael, and Andrew's birthday dinner at Eunice and Maria's place. Eunice is in the background, cooking up a storm!

12/16/2003: Eunice totally outdid herself this time, as she always does. :)

12/25/2003: Christmas dinner at home.

12/26/2003: Foosball at Chen's. As always Jeng kicked serious butt... until Chen and I shut him out! (with some added help ;)

12/26/2003: More our thing -- Time Crisis 3 (don't mess with Chen and me and our orange Namco guns! :), and Dance Dance Revolution in the background. As always (since 6th grade, for the 16 years that I've known him!), Chen has the most and best toys anywhere! (Jeng took this picture with his S230)

12/27/2003: Lunch at Saigonese in Wheaton with Phillip and Yen, soon followed by El Pollo Rico!

12/28/2003: Our usual visit to Brookside Gardens. Not so usual: we ran into my cousin Danny and his fiance, who are checking out places to get married! Quite the year of marriages...

12/28/2003: The whole gang at Will's.
