Are You Ready for Christmas? by Jill S. Barber

"Are you ready for Christmas?" is the question I hear,
When the signs of the season begin to appear.
The sights and the lights, the sounds and the songs,
Elicit the question from people in throngs.

"Just what does it mean to be ready?" I wonder.
I question myself and I sit and I ponder,
The meaning of being prepared for that day,
When all is expected to be the right way.

Are the presents bought and wrapped and in place?
Are decorations hung and strung in good taste?
Is the baking and cooking all done and all fresh,
For giving and serving to family and guests?

Are we all ready? Is all the work done?
There's so much to do to insure that the fun,
For the kids, (big and small), in our lives whom we love,
Is balanced with peace and joy from above.

And what of the poor and those in need?
Have we given to them in spite of our greed?
Have we offered a song and a prayer to our neighbors,
Those we dislike and those we favor?

Have we settled our differences with one another?
Are we living in harmony with our brother?
Do we truly know joy, and hope, and peace?
Is our heart's desire to see love increase?

Are these things what Christmas readiness is?
Or is there much more to this holiday biz?
Can I say, "I'm ready!" with sheer delight,
Knowing that all in my life is right?

As the countdown to Christmas makes others grow worried,
I find myself strangely at peace, not hurried.
The question is posed and my answer is clear,
"I am ready for Christmas each day of the year!"

Each day I receive God's gift through His Son,
Each day that I trust His Kingship has come,
To take His place on the throne of my heart,
Is the day I am ready for Christmas to start!

You see, only in readiness wrought with surrender,
Can I truly be filled with and know the splendor,
Of Christmas, God with us! Salvation so free!
With Jesus as Lord I have sweet victory!

So my Christmas wish for you today,
Is that you will be ready, and give up and say,
"Lord Jesus, I give my whole self to you,
Please use me on Christmas and all the year through."
