THE ARK OF THE COVENANT...
... was located inside the Holy of Holies
The lid of the ark was made of solid gold and was called the Mercy Seat.
The ark contained the stone tablets on which the law was written and symbolized the Old Covenant that God made with Moses and the people of Israel...

..."You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself. Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people..."
Exodus 19:4-5
However...
"Behold the days are coming, says the Lord,
when I will make a new covenant with
the House of Israel and Judah--
not according to the covenant
I made with their fathers
when I took them by the hand and
lead them out of the land of Egypt,
My covenant which they broke..."
Jeremiah 31:31-32
Jesus says... in John 8:58, "Most assuredly I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM." and in John 10:30, "I and my Father are one."
You see, Jesus was there when this covenant with Israel was made and broken. By establishing this covenant with man, God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, set a standard by which we are to live. But, because we are sinners we are unable to keep the Old Covenant.
This picture of the tabernacle was designed to point us to the New Covenant which came through Jesus.
