well, bereft of our beloved camping destination of Dorset, now too far for us to get to for a weekend, we decided to look around for a northern alternative, and thought Robin Hood's Bay in North Yorkshire might be the place. Also, because it was mid-February (Valentines), we also decided to stay in a B&B. Accomodation is hard to find in this neck of the woods if you turn up on the off-chance, but we recommend skipping the (useless) tourist office in Whitby and driving round the villages near to where you want to be. Robin Hood's Bay is a tourist hot spot, but half a mile away is the village of Fylingthorpe and a handful of empty B&B's, so that's where we stayed |

Robin Hoods Bay is at the end of Wainwright's famous Coast-to-Coast walk, it is reckoned he had the last laugh, because after you have walked the hundred and something miles from the Lancashire coast to reach the North Sea, to get anywhere, you have to turn round and climb the steep main street of the village. The two photos on the left give some impression of the gradients involved. Check out the weather beaten shop below, on the main street. Closed off-season with it's display of gnomes. |
