A nice trip out for the day is to the Blue Grotto on the south of the island. It's a bit cut off, but as the island is only a few miles from north to south, it doesn't take too long to get there. Particularly if you put your life in the hands of the local bus drivers. Beware of the ubiquitous rip-off taxi drivers who offer to take you the couple of hundred yards back up the steep winding road to the bus stop. There are boat trips to the Blue Grotto from the local fishing village. The colour of the water can't be given full justice by any photo I include here. It is best to go here before mid-day as the water in the cave gets full illumination by the sun. We went in the early afternoon, but it was still amazing. The bus back to Valetta stopped for a while on the way back so the driver could spend twenty minutes sitting in the shade with some of his cronies. |
