National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific |
Punchbowl, or Puowaina, literally translated "Hill of Sacrifice" is the final resting
place of thousands of World War II, Korean and Vietnam war veterans. Open
seven days a week, it overlooks the vast expanse of Pearl Harbor, Honolulu and
Waikiki. At present, there is no website for the cemetery. |
USS Missouri |
USS Missouri Website On August 15, 1945, the Japanese surrendered and World War II in the Pacific was over. The surrender was signed on September 2, 1945, on the USS Missouri. Decommissioned in 1995, the USS Missouri Memorial Association was selected to receive the Missouri at Pearl Harbor in 1998. |

USS Bowfin Website Visitors are given a cassette player that narrates their tour as they explore this historic WWII submarine to imagine what life on board must have been like for her 80-man crew. USS Bowfin was launched December 7, 1942, and completed nine successful war patrols. For her wartime service she also earned both the Presidential Unit Citation and the Navy Unit Commendation. |
USS Arizona and Museum The USS Arizona Memorial is built over the remains of the sunken battleship USS Arizona, the final resting place for many of the 1,177 crewmen killed on December 7, 1941, when their ship was bombed by the Japanese. Naval Forces. This loss of life represents over half of the Americans killed on this "Day of Infamy," the worst naval disaster in American History. |

This cemetery is one of two hallowed resting places in the vast Pacific for the recovered
remains of World War II dead whose next of kin did not request return
of the remains to the continental United States or requested they be buried at
the national cemetery. Original burials included 11,597 identified and 2,079
unidentified World War II dead from the Pacific. Punchbowl is now filled to
capacity with 33,230 gravesites. (This information provided by the 100th Infantry Batallion Veterans Club, whose members
man the visitors center at the cemetery. |
The 30-foot female figure known as "Columbia" stands on the symbolized prow of a
U.S. Navy carrier with a laurel branch in her left hand. Engraved below the figure is the sympathy
expressed by President Abraham Lincoln to Mrs. Bixby, the mother of five
sons who died in battle, "The solumn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly
a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom." |
An memorial sits high on the wall of the Crater. In the ten courts of the Missing
which flank the monumuental staircase are recorded the names of 18,094 World
War II heroes missing in action or lost or buried at sea; 8,195 in the Korean
Conflict, and 2,489 in Vietnam Conflict, a total of 28,779 names. |
This eternal flame is located across from the Hawaii State Capitol building and honors
those who served in the armed services from Hawaii. |
