The Shawshank Redemption is my all time favorite movie. It cannot really be described with one word, but "perfect" is the only one that does it justice. Everything about this film is truly outstanding.
Shawshank is a unique film where you don't only get to care for the characters, you get to love them. How can't you feel sad for good ol' Brooks who spent his entire life in prison and is now let into the harsh world, leaving the only place where he feels comfortable. How can't you feel for Andy Dufresne, wrongfully accused for the murder of his wife and her lover and sentenced to two consecutive life sentences. How can you not care for Red, who commited a stupid crime back when he was a stupid kid, and is now grown old and lost all hope.
The Shawshank Redemption is an exceptional story told in a perfect way. Both script and direction of this movie are flawless. The final plot twist is one of the greatest ever. The ending is unforgettable.
Morgan Freeman is outstanding as Red. It's his best performance to date and one of the best performances ever. Tim Robbins also delivers his best performance as Andy Dufresne, it's sad we don't see him in many good movies these days.
Shawshank is also a movie that gets better with each viewing. Not that I didn't love it the first time I saw it, but it didn't instantly become my favorite. It takes repeated viewings to fully appreciate this film.
Every time I watch Shawshank I try to find a flaw, but I always fail. This film is perfect. I feel sorry for anyone who disliked this masterpiece, and I don't think it got enough recognition. |
