Dani's Top 5 Kubrick Films
1.A Clockwork Orange (1971)
One of the greatest films of all time, "A Clockwork Orange" is a film about rape, ultra-violence and Beethoven. Kubrick's masterpiece is a stylish, mezmerizing, terrifying, clever, humorous, violent film that aside from being terribly entertaining is also a very important satire. The magic of Kubrick's filmmaking is constantly present, Clockwork Orange takes you to a whole new world. The cinematography is some of Kubrick's best and the brilliant performance by Malcolm McDowell is one to remember.
2.2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Kubrick's sci-fi masterpiece is a wonderfully imaginative film that delves into the nature of human beings. It's also an incredible achievement in the area of special effects that are still some of the best ever in a movie. Kubrick's vision basically makes the movie: the hypnotic cinematography, the deliberate slow pace, the lack of dialogue - just some of reasons that make 2001 a sci-fi classic. Watching this movie is an incredible experience, and it wouldn't have been so if it wasn't for Kubrick's vision.
3.Dr. Strangelove (1964)
This started as a serious film about the possibility of nuclear war, but it wouldn't have worked as well that way. Instead, Kubrick decided to make a comedy - a brilliant decision that lead to the making of one of the funniest films of all time. Peter Sellers is excellent in all 3 of his roles, George C. Scott delivers a delighfully over-the-top comic performance. There are some big laughs in Dr. Strangelove, which is amazing considering the subject matter it deals with. If anyone could have made a hilarious film about nuclear war, it had to be Kubrick.
4.The Shining (1980)
Even though made more than two decades ago, Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining", unlike many other horror films from that time still managed to scare the shit out of me. Kubrick's brilliance is most obvious through the excellent cinematography. It is quite possibly his best, but it's hard to tell as all of his films look fantastic. The visual style adds to the creepyness of the film, and although "The Shining" might not be as meaningful as Kubrick's other films, it is totally captivating and features a lot of Kubrick's signature touches. It also features a brilliant performance by the one and only Jack Nicholson.
5.Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
The bad news is that this is Kubrick's last film. The good news is that it's a damn good one! Eyes Wide Shut is pure Kubrick - awesome cinematography, creepy and erotic undertones and though-provoking. Tom Cruise delivers one of his greatest performances ever and Nicole Kidman is at her very best (and at her naked-est). The story is told brilliantly by Kubrick and includes some classic scenes, including the best opening shot ever. Stanley Kubrick is a genious and he will be missed...
