The phrase “you can’t trust anyone” can be heard all around now a days. Not too often do I stop and consider what that phrase really means. Can I really not trust anyone? Yes, I am not going to deny that people can cheat and back stab. People can cause other people an immense amount of pain. Humanity is definitely not above trickery or back stabbing. But does that mean its human nature to be untrustworthy? The question is a hard one to face but it is essential to forming a worldview. After some reflection on the subject, I’ve decided that I believe in the goodness of man.
Throughout my life, I have confronted both people who have treated me well and people who have treated me poorly. Just today I was shopping for Christmas gifts when a package I was holding fell while I was checking out. An average looking mom guiding her three children towards the check out counter beside mine reached down to pick up the package that had fallen. Wouldn’t it have been easier for her to just walk by the package? She did have three kids to watch after and she definitely did not need to help an unknown teen but she chose to help. Simple every day deeds of kindness like this, although often over looked, are wonderful examples of human kindness.
Without humanity’s goodness the world would be a much darker place. There would be war and suffering all around the world and no good to combat the evil. Human goodness is what gives the world beauty and although it may often be hard to see, it definitely exist in many ways.
