Summary of Chapter
The main point of the first chapter is
“the unexamined life is not worth living”. In class we discussed the meaning of
this saying. Socrates, the Greek philosopher, was the creator of this saying
which means that the idea of an examined life is a very old one. To live an
examined life is to reflect back on what you’ve done and to determine what was
bad and what was good about it. I think that this is an important idea because
to live an unexamined life is to live your life practically blind. Your past
and your future are intertwined and if you want to do something with your life
you have to know where you came from. Furthermore, how can you better yourself
if you don’t know what to fix. Reflecting or examining your life helps you
determine what needs to be fixed in your life. I agree with what Socrates says
about an examined life.

Idea 1:
Difference between
Reasoning and
Thinking
For the past few weeks we have discussed the differences between
reasoning and thinking. Most people think before making judgments but what this
class is trying to teach us is that we should also reason before making
judgments. To think before we make judgments means that we take what knowledge
that we already have and the knowledge that was given to us and we form an
idea. But to reason we need to do more research, to think deeper, and to not
take everything as truth. Although reasoning may be harder than just thinking,
to really get at the full truth reasoning is necessary. I think this idea is
important because it is essential if we really want to seek the truth.
Idea 2: What is
faith?
During class we have discussed faith in many different ways but
the first thing we did was define what faith is. Faith to different people
means different things but true faith has two parts, belief and trust. Faith is
not just blind trust or belief. It is an educated mix of the two. I decided to
talk about the definition of faith in this journal because it seems to me that
to truly understand something we need to at least know what the definition of
it is. Also when having a discussion with someone about faith you need to clarify
what your definition is so there are not any misunderstandings.
Idea 3: We are
all in the “Cave”
Another idea I got from the first section of this class is that
no matter what I can learn from others even when I disagree with them. We
talked about how all of us are in the “darkness” because no one knows the full
truth about anything. In my opinion the truth is very important and if I ever
want to understand it I have to listen to people who believe different things.
I need to listen to them because most likely they have some of the truth in
what they say. I can put the truth in both of our ideas together and move
closer to understand the bigger picture.
