Outline of the Gospel of Matthew: By Andrew Brady

I. Infancy Narratives
-The Genealogy of Jesus
-connects Jesus to David starting with Abraham
-"Of her was born Jesus who is called the Messiah." (MT 1, 16b)
-The Birth of Jesus-Jesus was born through the Holy Spirit
-The Massacre of the Infants
-Herod ordered all children in Bethlehem under 2 to be killed
-Herod was killed, and an angel appeared to Joseph saying,"Rise,take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child's life are dead." (MT 2, 20)

II. John the Baptist
-"I am baptizing you with water, for repentance, but the one who is coming after me is mightier than I." (Matthew 3:11a)
-John preached in Judea and preached about repenting
-John baptized Jesus in the Jordan River, and baptized many other for repentance

III. The Proclamation of the Kingdom
-The Temptation of Jesus
-Jesus was sent to the desert and tempted by the devil to worship him
-the devil offered Jesus all the kingdoms of the world
-Jesus answered, "Get away, Satan!" (MT 4, 10a)



IV. The Sermon on the Mount
-Starts with the Beattitudes and then similes about salt and light
-Teachings about the law, anger, adultery, divorce, oaths, retaliation, love of enemies, almsgiving, prayer, fasting (Our Father)
-Golden Rule: Do to others whatever you would have them do to you (MT 7, 12).



V. The Parable of the Sower
-A sower went out to sow. Some fell on a path and was eaten. Some fell on rocks with little soil. Some fell on thorns and was choked. However, some fell on the rich soil and produced many fruits.
-Explanation: Seed that was eaten is like one who hears the word of God and doesn't understand it. The seed that fell on the rocks is like one who understands it at first, but then it slowly goes away. The seed that was choked is one who is distracted from society and its pleasures. The seed that produced fruit is one who understands the word of God and applies it to his life.



VI. Oppostion from Israel
-John the Baptist was beheaded with the approval of Herod
-The Feeding of the 5000: There wasn't enough food to feed all the people around Jesus. Jesus then said a blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his disciples. Then all were satisfied with plenty of fish and bread.


VII. The Rich Young Man
-A man approached Jesus and asked how he can gain eternal life. Jesus said to follow the 10 Commandments. The man said he has followed them and asked what else he could do. Jesus told him to sell his possessions and give to the poor. The man left very sad for he many many things. Then Jesus said, "For human beings it is impossible, but for God all things are possible" (MT 19, 26).



VIII. The Last Supper (Lord's Supper)
-Jesus said a blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his disciples.
-Jesus said, "Take and eat; this is my body." (MT 26, 26)
-Then Jesus said, holding a cup, "Drink from it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed on behalf of many for the forgiveness of sins." (MT 26, 27-28)



IX. The Crucifixion and Death of Jesus
-Jesus was put on the cross by Roman soldiers and they cast lost for his clothes at Golgotha (these were Jesus' only possessions)
- -They placed above Jesus' head "This is Jesus, King of the Jews" (MT 27, 37).
-Two others were crucified beside Jesus. One of them (unknown name) repented to Jesus and he said that he would be in the Kingdom of Heaven. The other man didn't listen to Jesus.
-Jesus' last words in Matthew, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" (MT 27, 46)
-Not many people witnessed Jesus' death. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Joseph.



X. The Resurrection of Jesus and the Disciples
-Mary Magdalene and Mary went to the tomb saw an angel.
-The angel said to be not afraid and that Jesus has risen from the dead. The angel also told them to tell the disciples that Jesus has risen.
-Then they went as they were told and met Jesus. They embraced Him and paid homage to Him. Then Jesus said, "Do not be afraid" (MT 28, 10).
