It also means that it is time for Alpine's World Cup Qualifying Pickem! Alpine's World Cup Qualifying Pickem' Contest!!! Yes, you too can have your hopes and dreams dashed in this thrilling, snail-paced, contest sure to highlight your geographical ignorance. Djibouti? Gesundheit. How to Play: Pick the 32 teams you think will qualify for the 2010 World Cup. Then assign each team a number from 1 to 32. Do not use the same number twice. Give teams you are most confident about the higher numbers. The number you assign will be the points you receive if that team qualifies for the World Cup. For example, if you feel strongly that South Africa will qualify (hint, hint) you would be well advised to assign them a high number like 32. In addition to your 32 picks, you must designate a tie-breaker. Select one of your 32 teams (excluding South Africa) and predict how many goals they will score during qualifying. This team does not have to qualify for the World Cup to be valid as a tie-breaker, however it must be one of your 32 chosen teams. The person with the highest score at the end of qualifying will be the winner. In the event of a tie, the entry which most closely predicted the total goals scored by their tie breaking team wins the tie. The winner's prize will be the momentary admiration of a stranger who accidentally stumbles upon the results page, nods approvingly of your achievement, and moves on to what they were actually searching for in the first place. It may help to know how many teams will qualify from each confederation, the qualifying format, and qualifying groups. FIFA's World Cup site is a good source for that information.
