June 2006 - Daisy at the Actuary Convention
In Daisy's own words:  "In June I got to explore the mysterious world of actuaries. Nobody really knows what actuaries do, and I was determined to find out.  So I dropped in on their conference in Florida."
<< "My first stop was Registration.  Good thing I was wearing my registration tag!  I sailed through easily."
"Once inside, I came to a table with actuarial literature.  I opened up a colorful booklet that looked interesting, but on the inside there were nothing but boring tables of numbers." >>
<< "On the other hand, it looks like actuaries do really exciting things.  I found one exhibit that showed an actuary hiking through the mountains.  That looks like a lot of fun.  It looks like actuaries get to explore and see the world.  My type of people!"
"Actuaries also seem to spend a lot of time in meetings.  I wandered into a meeting on hurricanes and another on reinsurance pools.  I don't like hurricanes, but if reinsurance pools are anything like the pool in the backyard, I hope the actuaries make more of them!"
"The highlight of my trip was the software demonstration by a consulting firm, Reden & Anders.  I went over to take a look -- it makes such cool charts!  After I'd been there for a minute or two, a couple of friendly folks came over to wine and dine me, while they explained the finer points of trend management.  They really do know how to treat a customer right!

I must have consumed nearly my entire body weight in gin and tonic, and I'm afraid I don't quire remember what happened next.  But when I awoke, all the actuaries were gone.  I hope I'll see them again some day!"
