Why study morality?

Morality exists all around us and comes into play everyday of our lives through the decisions we make and through the decisions of others. There are many reasons why we should study morality. One is that you can become more aware of how much some of your choices can affect others. If you look more closely at how your choices are affecting others you begin to see the beliefs behind your choices. You question your beliefs and by questioning them you make them stronger. Then you start seeing morality all around you; in movies, on the news, and in everyday life. This allows you to think about what you can do to change the world to make the world more moral. Finally we begin to realize how deeply rooted morality is in our culture and how it has affected the way we think, feel, and act.

I grew up with many of the popular stories like “the little engine that could,” “the three little pigs,” “red riding hood,” and “Jack and the bean stock.” But, another thing I grew up with was a book of bible stories. It was a pretty thick book with pictures that had stories from the bible written for kids. I remember going through that book at least three times when I was a kid. My heroes became Samson, Moses, and David. Some of the big lessons I was taught were “never give up,” “don’t judge a book by its cover,” and “love your neighbor as yourself.” I was always taught that God came first then school and then sports. I really think that these stories were the basis for my morals today.

One song that always has stuck in my head is the song “perfect” by simple plan. It is a song about the relationship between father and son. It talks about the pressures that father put on their kids because e they love them and they want them to have a good life. The rebellious kid does what he wants to do. The song is about realizing you’re not perfect, cherishing your relationship with your dad and striving to be better.

One movie that I have always inspired me is “Pistol Pete.” The movie is about an old time famous basketball player named Pete Maravich. It is about Pete aspiring to be like his father and play at a young age even though everyone at school was telling him that he couldn’t do it. Pistol Pete became a legend. It has always inspired me to become better and to not let others get to me.

From my dad: “never give up” My dad constantly pushes my brother and sisters and I to never give up. He wanted us to achieve our dreams. For example, my dad didn’t get the greatest grades in high school and so in college he had to work his butt off to get where he is now. So he constantly pushes me to do good in high school so I don’t have to worry as much about getting into a good college. HE does this because he loves me. And that value has rubbed off on me. I sometimes find my self telling the same things to my little brother.

What does it say about me if I have no problem lying to my teachers and or my parents? Am I an honest person? How am I affecting those relationships?

In my life I can strive to be honest all the time and not just when I know it really matters or when I could easily get caught. I need to try to develop a better relationship with my parents by not lying to them. I should always tell them the truth about where I’m going and what I’m doing.
