Moral system Journal (2)

In this section we studied the different major moral systems throughout the world. We studied Buddhism, Confucianism, Islam, and Judaism. In addition to the basics of each moral system like the Four Noble Truths, the Four Virtues, the Five Pillars, and the Ten Commandments, we also studied the origination of each system and their founders. (Buddhism- Siddhartha Guatama, Confucianism- Confucius, Abraham) Then, after looking at each system individually, we stepped back and looked at the big picture. We compared each system to each other noticing similarities and differences. Then we began to ask ourselves questions like how did all these moral systems come about at around the same time and how have they lasted all these years? Then we question, which one is right?

From Confucianism:

Jen- This term is the representation of everything Confucius was trying to teach. Its closest literal meaning is “social virtue.” All of Confucianism’s teachings are included in this one term. It includes benevolence and goodness and following Confucius’s idea of the Golden Rule: Do not do unto others what you would not want others to do to you.

From Buddhism:

Samsara- This term is the infinite cycle of birth and rebirth. It is derived to mean “to flow together,” or to pass or go through states, to wander. Samsara describes the process of reincarnation and the transmigration of life forms between lives. We are to go through birth, death, and rebirth or Samsara until we achieve nirvana.

From Islam:

Jihad- there are two types of this very misunderstood term.

1) personal-the most common type of jihad, which is an inner struggle to purify oneself

2) military-armed fighting against non-Muslims dedicated to Allah Jihad, or “holy war” is an internal struggle and an external struggle for the advancement of Islam and Allah, and the elimination of evils.

What is it that allows these moral systems to last all this time?

From learning about the other moral systems of the world I think it has opened my eyes to see that there is more than one way. There is more than just the way that I have been brought up to believe. It has caused me to question my fait hand ask myself if this way is the right and if it is the right way for me? In questioning my faith I think that I am making it stronger.
