In January of 2000, my daughter was attacked in our home. As her attacker continued to stalk and harass us once he had been released on bond, we became terrified - afraid to leave our home, yet deep down we also realized the very frightening truth - that in reality, we weren't even safe behind our securely locked and bolted doors. And so, without giving any thought to the fact that we were doing something that many people would deny us the right to do ... We acquired a gun.
Weeks later, as we sat in the Crisis Counselor's office, we listened patiently as she endlessly droned on about the dangers of our having brought this horrible gun into our homes. She tried - in vain - to make us see the benefit of getting rid of this offending weapon, despite the fact that we were two women living alone - two very small women with absolutely no means of protection.
As I tried to make sense of what she was desperately attempting to explain to us, I began to realize that there was absolutely nothing she could say that would even strike a remote chord of reason - because there was none. And that's when it occurred to me that this whole issue of gun control has gone beyond reason, beyond any form of rational or explanation.
The Government would have you believe that by enacting stronger, more vigorous gun control laws, our nation will become a much safer place to live. They treat the American Public as if we were only a species of mindless creatures - unable to ascertain the validity of an argument so completely absurd. Gun control, the banning of guns ... these laws and regulations will only affect the law abiding citizens. Does anyone in Washington truly believe that criminals obey laws? Isn't that what makes them criminals in the first place - the fact that they do willingly and openly disobey the law? Does Washington, with all of its focus on gun control, mean to imply that once these new laws are enacted, the Black Market will cease to exist?
I do not believe that anyone with the ability to think and reason will concur with such ludicrous assumptions. Yet - this is what is being proposed ... "Make the world a safer place, enact stronger gun control laws". Yet, here is a terrifying thought in itself ... If you take guns away from the innocent, law-abiding citizens ... then only the criminals will remain armed. And then my friends, where are we?
I can tell you that I for one, will vehemently refuse to give up my right to gun ownership. From the very frightening personal experience of having had to wait an eternal twenty-five minutes before the police responded to our desperate cry for help as this would be attacker tried to re-enter our home a second time; having lived the last eight months of our lives in terror, with assistance from the police so severely limited by too many laws that already protect the criminal - it is a small but undeniable comfort that should this man once again return to our home, I can defend and protect my daughter.
Please, I do not propose that all gun control regulations are innately bad. I only suggest that they have been carried to far, and a significance far greater than reality placed upon the expected result.
As an intelligent being - as a fellow American ... I only ask that you please, know the facts ... and think for yourself ... Before you choose a stance on this very important issue.
