Modern
Mexico: Influenced by
A WebQuest for 9th-12th Grade (E.S.L./History) Designed by Elbert
Shitamoto Introduction | Task | Process | Resources | Evaluation | Conclusion | Credits When the Spanish explorer
Hernán Cortés (Hernándo Cortéz) first arrived in the city of
Tenochtitlán, it was the first time that the Aztec
ruler Moctezuma (Montezuma II) had ever seen a Spaniard.
Since that time, almost 500 years have past.
What parts of Spanish culture are shared by Mexican
culture? Is Aztec culture still a part of Mexican culture?
You and other members of
your team are researching Aztec, Mexican and Spanish culture. First, as an individual expert, you will research specific information
about Aztec,
Mexican, and Spanish culture in one of four different
fields.
You will find out specific
information relating to your chosen field by answering questions and
using the web links provided in this WebQuest. You will use this
information to create a journal entry that will summarize what was
learned. After you have collected your individual
research, you will report your findings to your group. Discuss
your findings in detail with your team and be sure to comment on the
findings of the other experts in your team. Be sure to notice any
similarities between the expert findings and also any
differences. Pay close attention to
what other teams have discovered. Compare their findings with
your team's findings. Be prepared to take notes, especially if
you hear important information that your team did not find in your
research. After all groups have
presented their Team Graphic Organizers, meet with your team and
prepare a Final Report on the influence of Aztec and Spanish cultures
on modern day Mexico. Be sure to use your journal entries and
Graphic Organizer as the blueprint for success.
1. Find a team to join (4 students total). Be quick because teachers and library media teachers love assigning students to teams! 2. Decide
which job you will perform in your team. 3. Once
you have a job, click on your job title and read the contents to
understand what your job
requirements are. Enter your findings into a journal. 4. Check
in with your teacher and/or the library media teacher from time to time
as you collect each bit of data for your journal
entries. 5. Once
you are done collecting your data, please go to the Conclusion
for help with the group portion of your
report. Your team will be evaluated as a group and
you will
receive a grade on your team report.

Don’t forget to get photographs, illustrations, and other supporting documents! Be sure to acknowledge your sources for photos, illustrations, and documents by copying and pasting the web page address. For example, the Tenochtitlán photo at the top of the page is from <http://www.azteca.net/aztec/prehisp/teotihu1.jpg>.
IF SO, HOW MUCH OF AN INFLUENCE DID THEY HAVE ON MEXICAN
CULTURE?
IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT ELEMENTS OF THE AZTEC AND SPANISH
CULTURES HAVE HAD THE MOST INFLUENCE ON MEXICAN CULTURE?
WHY?
Thank you very much to Ms. Goldman (E.S.L. Teacher, Hamilton High
School) for her patience and assistance in working collaboratively with
me on my very first WebQuest. Many thanks to Ms. Bernier (Library Media Teacher, Hamiltion
High School; C.S.U.L.B. Field Work Instructor). Without her
tremendous technical assistance, this WebQuest would only be a WebBlob!
