Line-up:
Jon Nicholas
- Vocals/Guitars, Pete Bartlett - Bass/Keyboards, Steve Hales - Drums (Dave Rokk played on the CD, but is not included in the current line-up.)

STRANGLEHOLD must be the most kept Heavy Metal secret outside the U.K.!!! Thanks to their excellent WEB-site, I found out about this amazing Metal-machine. This band has the potential to make it big if the Metal scene stays on the real Metal track as it seems to do right now. Total Eclipse is their second CD-release and like the previous ones (Dying By Design) this is self-financed. There's 5 very strong tracks on Total Eclipse which totally blew me away!!!! The opener, Total Eclipse just make it's way into your head and you find yourself in Metal Heaven!! It is not fair to point out any single track from the CD, because all 5 tracks stands out as some of the most exciting pieces of Melodic Heavy Metal I've heard out of U.K. in ages. At the moment, it seemes like the old strong bands like METAL CHURCH and JUDAS PRIEST is the only real Heavy Metal the U.K. has to offer. STRANGLEHOLD is like new blood in an old (and maybe rusty) Heavy Metal body. The band is a gem for any descent Recordcompany signing Metal bands these days. Musically, the band draw inspirations from the likes of Yngwie Malmsteen, Iron Maiden, Dio and even good old Deep Purple. Yet, they have their own sound. They write excellent songs with hooks and riffs that tells me these guys sounds just like a Heavy Metal band should do on the threshold of the new millenium. The music is melodic, yet hard as hell. The guitarwork is first class, and rythm section is holding the whole thing together with a great authority. On top of it all, the vocals is just right for the music. In my mind, we're dealing with the complete Heavy Metal package of the future, and guess what, this is NOT German Metal. I love German Metal, but this is simply STRANGLEHOLD.
Visit their WEB-site and get your copy of Total Eclipse NOW, and be amazed!!! I hope the band get themselves a good record-deal before long, and I would not mind at all seeing STRANGLEHOLD being the band waving the Union Jack at the Wacken Open Air festival year 2000!!!!

Corporate Mass
Reviewed 22.11.98: No Kings Or Queens (Self-financed)
Homepage: CORPORATE MASS
Line-up:
Deb Portalatin
- Vocals, Mick Michaels - Guitars, John Coonan - Guitars, James Lepera - Bass, Dave Caudill - Drums

CORPORATE MASS is a band out of Philadelphia, U.S.A. who should appeal to all lovers of Progressive Metal & Heavy Metal music and thoughtful, imaginative lyrics to go with it. They've been around for quite a while, starting under the name Seeker in the mid to late eighties. Two years later, Corporate Mass was formed out of Seeker to add a unique edge to their allready powerful sound. Their self-financed debut-CD, No Kings Or Queens, present a band that is determined to make a living out of their music and be mentioned together with bands like Queensrÿche, Dream Theater, Savatage, Judas Priest, Fates Warning, and the list goes on. Will they succeed? I think they're on to something good with their debut CD. What you'll find on the CD is a theme attributed to the desire for humans across the ages to become aware of their surroundings and what fate lies for mankind (outtake from the bands bio). The opening track Power revolution (From a writers mind) brings you straight into the world of Corporate Mass and the heart of their music. It takes you into the second track Among the masses which introduces the splendid vocals of Deb Portalatin. It also tells you what a powerful unit Corporate Mass really is. The sound is really Heavy and the production is very good, concidering the fact that the CD is entirely made by the band themselves. The song is well structured and makes you want to hear more. 3rd song is No humans. It opens with a beautiful, ballad-like guitar part before it explodes into a sheer Heavy Metal extravaganza. Yeah, I dig this big time!!!! There's also tempo changes enough to intrigue the Prog.Metal diehards out there. Next track is Highlander. Many of you are familiar with the great movies The Highlander & The Quickening. Well, this track is inspired by the first movie. I've seen both movies, and when I'm leaning back, listening to this track with my eyes closed, my mind travels back to the movie and I see the powerful scenes from it passes by. Killertrack!!!! Following the order of the movies, next track is of course The quickening. A strange and mysterious instrumental track which gives us an idea of the concept without any words used. It ends with the power of the Scottish bagpipes which I happend to love so much. The next track Streets To Society Hill is also a short, instrumental guiding us into the track Society Hill. A powerful song in which Deb really goes for it! It is so Heavy, yet so full of feeling and atmosphere. The next track When the reign comes starts with the marching of soldiers which gives you the creepy feeling of the Warlords army on the move to conquer the world. Another track that showes a very strong and in-synq band who really knows how to play and make exciting music for the masses. The hunt has begun opens in a very uptempo fashion. It has this Thrash-Metal groove to it. As the song evolves, they moving over to the now more familiar Corporate Mass sound, but still it maintain a faster pace than what we've heard earlier on the album. A very Heavy track it is. From the mouth of Eve slows down the pace again, but the riff is very Heavy. It is a very good vocal-line to it, so what we have here is a Heavy, melodious song. The next song, Walk on a fine line, opens in a slow Heavy riff. When the actual song starts, the riffing gets more intense. The vocal-line is placed mostly on one note during the verses before it opens up for the choruses. My guess is to bring the listener attention more to the lyrics than to the actual music. Next is "Q", which takes up the speed again. The variety in the bands music is excellent. Track #13, Domino Man, is the longest song on the CD. It happends to be my favorite too. It's a dramatic piece of music they're displaying on this one. A long, instrumental intro makes you curious of what to come. When the vocals comes on, you just know that this is a Killertrack. I just love it!!!! Closing track is The Mechanism, a great intrumental track, which wraps up a very exciting debut-CD from a band who really wants to go places with their music. With the way the Metal scene is developing, I would say they have a good chance to make it. The CD is very well played, well produced and very exciting to listen to. It calls for many spins because the music demands much more than just a quick run trough. All I can say is do yourselves a favore and get a hold of this album a.s.a.p. and be amazed of the musical quality of CORPORATE MASS!!!!
A brief update on the band line-up: Since the CD was finnished, Deb left the band for personal reasons. The band wants to continue the unique female vocal sound to their music and they have been looking for a new female singer for some time now. The last news I heard from them, is that they have tried out several candidates lately and the list is now narrowed down to two candidates. I surely hope they can come up with a vocalist of Debs quality, because it really adds a lot to their sound. I wish you all the luck in the world guys!!!

PARIAH
Reviewed 16.03.98: Unity (Self-financed)
Homepage: PARIAH
Line-up:
Alan Hunter
- Vocals, Russ Tippins - Guitars, Steve Ramsey - Guitars, Graeme English - Bass, Ian McCormack - Drums

PARIAH IS BACK!!!!. To me, this is one of the best news out of Great Brittain in a long, long time for fans of Heavy Metal. Since this is by no means newcomers on the scene, a brief historical flashback is in place. In 1981, they started out as SATAN and gained some very good response from their releases. In 1988 they ran into trouble with some religious groups who mistakenly labled them as Satanists due to their name. So they changed their name to PARIAH. Their first release with the new name, The Kindred, was not as good as they aimed for. Their next album, Blaze Of Obscurity, released in 1989 was their biggest selling album all together. Due to circumstances out of their control, the band had to be put on hold. During the years, a couple of the members got involved with SKYCLAD ( and they still are). Well, now they found time to reborn PARIAH, and in 16 days they recorded and finnished their self-financed album Unity. And what an album!!!!! It contains some awesome Heavy Metal that will certainly attract attention among fans to this genre. There is really not a weak spot to be found here. My favourite tracks sofar is Saboteurs and Walking Wounded. Saboteurs is a fast, headbanging song that brings back the true feeling of Metal. This is the kind of stuff the Metal scene are longing for. Great vocals, excellent playing, and the Metal mood is all over the place. Walking Wounded kind of sums up the capabilities the band holds. It is a varied song, but Heavy as hell in the parts where it is required. I could pick out more tracks, but I don't. I can assure you that they all are true goodies for Metalheads. And with members from SKYCLAD, TYSONDOG, CRONOS and BATTLEAXE, you know that PARIAH has the quality to kick ass!!!
My advise is to check it out yourselves. Note that this album will never hit the recordstores. The band is doing all the promotion, distribution and sales themselves. In order to buy the album, check out their Official Homepage, or send them an E-mail for further information.
Unity is a must for lovers of Brittish Heavy Metal!!!!

AFTERLIFE

Line-up:
Jarrod Cox
- Bass/Vocals/Keyboards/Midi Pedals, Brian Montrey - Guitars/Backing Vocals, Michael Johnson - Drums & Percussion

What we're dealing with here, is an unsigned band with a line-up including three highly educated and professional musicians from Los Angeles (U.S.A.). Sofar, they have received very good reviews from magazines like Rock Hard and Heavy Oder Was??? (Germany), Burrn (Japan) and Metalized (Denmark) and more. Stylewise, the immediate comparison would be RUSH. No wonder, as they have toured the western part of the US as a RUSH-tribute band under the name CARESS OF STEEL. A closer listening also reveils references to bands like LED ZEPPELIN, STEELY DAN, VAN HALEN and DREAM THEATER.
After cruising around as a RUSH-tribute band for a long time, they decided it was time to explore their own ability to write music and songs on their own. The result is this selftitled CD, Afterlife. I was struck by the high level of quality in their music. Luckily, they are not a band who aim to show off their great musical skills. Instead, they manage to colourize the songs with their skills without turning the listeners attention away from the actual songs. This way, they succeed in lifting the songs to an even higher level.
If you like your music adventurous, melodic and exotic, then AFTERLIFE is the band to check out. I also urge you to check out their own WEB-site, AFTERLIFE

READING ZERO

Line-up:
Chris Roy
- Vocals/Bass/Synth, Chris Pellerin - Electric & Lead Guitar, Joel Decatur - Electric & Acoustic Guitar, Russ Pellerin - Drums

Here's to all fellow Metalheads who appreciate a dose of excellent Prog.Metal whenever there's a chance. You better let the name READING ZERO sink into your minds, because with their release of the self-financed CD, The Actual, you're bound to hear more from them in the future.
The band comes from Florida, USA, and they have come up with an impressive CD. The musicianship is impeccable, so are their talents for songwriting. Other strong points is their ability to combine a complex musical style, still maintaining a strong sense of melody in their songs. They have really done a great job with the lyrics, which showes that thoughtful lyrics works well with the music. The lyrics is best described as thought provocative. In that respect, I'm tempted to let them share the same description as one of my favorite bands, SKYCLAD, have gained: The Thinking Man's Metal. They've managed to carve out their own personal style. I, for one, can't figure out any major, or well-known bands to compare them with. I'm sure they will appeal to Metal-fans from different camps, something that must be an appetiser for the record companies. That is an important fact, because READING ZERO are shopping for a good and serious deal.
I pity the labels who don't ensure their signature on the dotted line!!! The CD is available through their own WEB-site. Do yourself a favor, check it out and order a copy of their impressive CD The Actual.

 ENERTIA

Homepage: ENERTIA
Line-up:
Scott Featherstone
- Vocals, Joe Paciolla - Bass, Roman Singleton - Guitar, Dave Stafford - Guitar, Jeff Daley - Drums

ENERTIA has the balls to go places others only dreams about. This is a young band. Their self-financed CD Law Of Three was released in 1996, just 6 months after the band was formed. Despite this fact, the band sounds very mature. Stylewise, these guys are basically a Power Metal band, but their nifty rythm changes brings my mind to some serious Prog. Metal vibes. They have covered all the musical/instrumental/songwriting bases with an authority you normally only find in bands that has been around for ages. The first track The Mirror pins you down with its hardedged riff, and the eminent vocals delivered by Scott sets the standard. 3 minutes into the track, a short, but oh so excellent guitarsolo should draw the attention from the most sophisticated orientated guitar freak around. Track two, Child Now Lost opens with some punchy bass lines and drums. The mood has changed into a more grave pattern. No wonder, the song deals with child abuse. It's a strong track with a serious message attached. Third out is I Know Your Demons. This track is quite different from the two previous ones. There's a weird beat to it, kind of psychotic madness. Well, I guess it has to be, cause it deals with the mind of a serial killer. The rythm changes all the time, and the music suits the lyrical theme perfectly. Next stop is Same Old Story. It opens with some tasty bass lines, before the guitars joins in. The vibe is Prog. Metalish. My head is swinging!!! The last track, If I Were You, is the CDs definitive Progressive track. On this one, Joe really work his bass to the limits. ENERTIA are a living proof of the growing interest for True Metal that's coming on. Law Of Three is one of the best self-financed CDs I've heard in ages. I bet these guys has signed a deal before 1998. If not, it will be the record companies sorry asses. Get a copy of this CD and be amazed. The best news is that they are releasing their first full time CD Momentum July 8th.

NOVEMBER
reviewed 26.06.97: November (Promotape, 1996)
Homepage: NOVEMBER
Line-up:
Mike Murray - Vocals, Blane Gilbert - Drums, Mark DuBose - Bass, Paul Marko - Guitars

Yet another proof of the classic Metal movement is resurfing again. November, hailing from Florida, USA have dished out a selftitled demotape filled with Heavy Metal which brings back flashbacks from the glorious 80s. According to themselves, they are influenced by bands like Rainbow and Soundgarden. I don't really find the Soundgarden part so strong (not that I find that disturbing). I would like to put in bands like Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath and even Guns 'N' Roses instead. Nevertheless, November is a living proof of a new Metal Age back on the tracks again. Their selftitled demotape November consists of 10 Metal tracks that rocks!! First out is Little Piece Of Me. An uptempo Metal track that takes off in a true, groovy Heavy Metal mood ala the 80s. Flashy guitars, good hooklines, vocals with catchy melodyline and a steady beat from the rythm section kind of sets the standard for this demotape. Second out is Revolution, starts up with some tasty guitars. It developes into a classic Heavy Metal riff based song that wont vanish from your brain. Third track,The Flower, is a kind of ballad without being wimpish. The fuzzorama is around all the way. Fourth track,Die So Young, my favorite track (at the moment), has a really groovy riff that makes my head move in mysterious ways. The riff is simple, but dead on the spot. This is the kind of riffs that the riffomaster Tony Iommi tought us, you know. Being a riffomaniac myself, no wonder this track rocks me!!! Next track, Won't Turn Away, is more standard. The vocals playing the main part here. I miss the riff, but there's a tasty guitar-solo in the middle. Number six, New Day Rising brings back a heavier sound. Ah, the riff is back. The vocal melodyline is very good, and the guitarsolo rocks. Next track, September, starts up with a slow beat. The sound is thick and heavy, but less interesting than previous tracks. Track eight, I'll Be Waiting, puts the band back on track. An uptempo song. First really 90s influences due to some industrial sounds to the vocals in the chorus. I don't really like Industrial Metal, but it didn't bother me in this song. Track number nine, Here Comes The Pain, coming up. A heavy riff leading us into the song. This is my second favorite track, due to its heavy riffing and melodyline. Last track, Wicked Man, is a rocker. No time to rest. When its over, you want to hear more. November has the potential to make their way on the new wave of Metal, no doubt about it. Their demo proofs it. It's about time they get signed to a lable. They deserve a good production and an enhanced sound.

Seasons Of The Wolf

Homepage: SEASONS OF THE WOLF
Line-up:
Phaedra Rubio - Bass, Wayne Hoefle - Drums, Dennis Ristow - Keyboards, Wes Waddell - Lead Vocals, Barry Waddell - Guitar, Backing Vocals

S.O.T.W. is one of the most dedicated bands I have come across in a long time. Their press-kit is a masterpiece. Their dedication for the band is beyond anything I've seen sofar. They're hailing from sunny Florida, USA, and they formed back in '88. Through the years, they have built up a reputation for being a very visual band on stage. They have also built their own studio and stage for Live-performances. Talk about dedication! Last year, they released their self titled 6-track cd Seasons Of The Wolf. We're talking classic Heavy Metal with progressive overtones. S.O.T.W. are influenced by a variety of musical styles, and it's shining through their music. They have come up with a unique sound of their own, despite their obvious basic Metal influences from the 70s and the 80s. In some odd way, they realize we're in the 90s now. The band like to describe their music as New Age Metal, which is a new one for me. There are no showing off instrumental extravaganza going on. Instead, they display a vibe of strong band unity. First track, Misty shades Of Green starts with a tasteful keyboard intro from Dennis. The band joins in and you have a mid-tempo classic Metal groove going. When Wes joins in on vocals, I know this is something I like. His voice and melodyline suits the music perfect. I want to hear more! Next track is October Moon. It starts up more uptempo and slightly more heavy. The main groove, however slows down, but after a while it turns faster. This is getting better!. Third track, Victim Of Darkness starts up with some serious bass lines. This is more darkish and dramatic than the previous tracks. Wes puts in some serious pressure to his voice on this one. True Metal!! Fourth track, Electric Dimention turns out to be my favorite. It starts up quitely with guitar and keyboard. This track's growing on me. It's getting heavier and heavier. The tempo goes faster and the keyboards are really working fine on this one. Barry's guitarplaying has sofar been a little bit shy, but on this track, he's making his stand. Fifth track, Long Cold Winter starts up with tasteful keys and guitar and goes into a more classic Metal groove. The guitar is evident on this track as well. The last track, 10.000 - 10.000, makes a punchy end to this CD. Through the CD, the Rythm section provided by Phaedra (Bass) and Wayne (Drums), has been rock solid and a very important part of the S.O.T.W. sound. The next release will take place in october 1997. It will include 10 tracks. If you share my interest for classic Heavy Metal dressed in in the mood of the the 90s, get this CD, and step in line with me waiting for their new release. S.O T.W. will be an important contributor to the new wave of Metal resurfing these days.

Harald Eilertsen
- Bass/Vocals, Anders Tomter - Guitar, Lasse Følstad - Guitar, Vidar Berg - Drums

I just received a self-financed demo-CD from the band FROST, hailing from the city of Trondheim, Norway. Home of bands like TNT, Motorpsycho, Bethzaida to name a few. Being a Metalhead for years, There's been more than once I've been frustrated by the Metal-scene over the last years. Finally, it really seems that the METAL are resurfing big way. A healthy sign is the fact that bands are now openly stateing they're playing Thrash Metal without having their faces blushing up like red tomatoes. FROST are indeed proud they're exposeing an agressive Thrash-metal groove, and so they should be. I, for one, got Frostbitten. Their demo-CD Contemplating Upon Change In The World... is a statement made by a band that meens business. These guys burn!!!!, and they are NORWEGIAN!!! The CD includes 5 really good tracks and from their press-release, they're hard at work with new material. The opener, Life After Death, is a hilerious, up-tempo Thrash-Metal song that makes your head go banging wether you want it or not. 1 minute into the song, I just had a mouthful of homeburned hamburger, I suddenly found myself choakin' on it. A freakin' Fiddle bursted out of my speakers???!!! Hey, I thought I've heard just about everything prior to this CD, but I've never heard a FIDDLE???!!! mixed in a Thrash-Metal song. Instant replay-mode came up. Yup, there was the fiddle, and it matched the song great. The remaining 4 tracks, Contemplating Upon Change In The World..., Stalk, You're Doomed and Tenk Deg Om, was not as up- tempo as the opener (and the fiddle was gone), but the agressive approach is not lost. The last track has Norwegian lyrics, which is rather cool. Musically, these guys know their ways around their instruments, songwriting and attitude. The artwork on the CD is good and shows that they are destined for higher goals than just being another amateurband from nowhere. I would not be surprised to see FROST signed to one of the major, indipendent Metal-labels in a year or so from now. Interested parties should contact:

Line-up:
Rune Hansen
- Vocals, Robert Christensen - Bass Guitar, Jacob Schultz - Guitar, Peter Larsen - Drums

SELF is a new Hardcore band hailing from Esbjerg, the westcoast area of Denmark. The Sinister Urge is their debut-album and they are currently shopping for a record deal. The opening track Cube Of Lead really set the paiste for the album. SELF goes for your throat, and then they hit you in the face like a Sledge Hammer. Putting on the album takes you to a 13 track journey through a sheer bonecrushing mayhem lasting over 20 minutes. Stylewise, they have a lot in common with the american old-school Hardcore scene. The band sounds really tight. The rhythm section of Robert C. and Peter L. is impressingly precise. Jacob S. guitar riffs is like a concrete wall of sound, and Rune Hansen belting out his vocals like a Drill Sergeant on overdrive! I'm talkin' Hardcore with a capitol H here. One detail I do like about the album, is how they manage to change the tempo in the songs without loosing their agressive approach. The band didn't waste any time in the studio either. With Jacob Hansen (ex-Invocator) producing and mixing the album, they recorded the album in just 4 days!! This sounds like a really short time, but maybe this is the key to why I think this album turned out so well. There's a good Live vibe to it, and in 4 days, they don't loose the momentum, which can easily happen when you're locked up for weeks and months in a studio. And for Hardcore, I believe the momentum is critical. My favourite tracks on the album, is Hyped, Rule Your Mind and Resentment. If you're into bands like Agnostic Front, Sick Of It All, Slapshot, Madball and Biohazard, this is the album for you. Who's the lucky record company to sign them, I wonder???

Ready for some Fun, Sex & Rock'n Roll?? Well read on:
I received their CD Bring The Lotion some days ago, and LIVER RUUULES!!!!! Here's some serious thoughts:
You see, I've been a Metalhead for many years and probably will be by the time I pick up my teeth from the glass of water at my bedside table in the mornings. I love music from most of the different Metal-genres. But there is one thing wrong with the scene today. WHERE THE FUCK IS THE FUN, SEX & ROCK'N ROLL?????? Hey, the only band around that makes me laugh and have a good time, is GWAR!!!!! Here's some more serious thoughts:
From a musical point of view, the Metal scene is so full of Death, Dark and Evil thoughts, Serious thoughts, Social Awareness, Self-indulgent shit etc, but NO FUN. From the peoples point of view:
What happens if 1) A guy goes broke cause the stock market takes a nosedive to point zero, 2) the teenage guy getting caught by his mother with his dick in his hand, 3) The blond bimbo breaking her nail 4) and the cat dies. It all adds up to one thing, LIFE SUCKS from time to time. I know the cure. Put on Bring The Lotion and let's PARTY ON!!!!!!!! Yes, this is the funniest piece of Metal I've come across in ages!!! On a bad day, put it on and I garantee it will turn the day into a party. And the lyrics, hey Shakespeare, GET LOST, WILL YOU!!!!! Make way for the poets of the wanking generation!!! The opener is so vivid, I could almost smell it!!!! Keep up the good work guys. Like the captain says: SHIP O'HOI, WANKERS AWAY!!!

Allegiance is a Metal band hailing from Perth, Australia. It's amazingly few bands from Down Under who has made it overseas, considering the size of the Australian continent. (Well, some have. Where the hell do you think we nicked the name HIGH VOLTAGE from???!!!) A couple of days ago, I received their latest CD, Skinman, kindly mailed to me from the band themselves. After listening to the first couple of tracks, I experienced a truly mental (eeehhh metal that is) refreshment of my mind. If ever there was a Metalband (I'm talkin' METAL here!!!!) who deserved to break big worldwide, Allegiance must be it! Just about all releases within the Metal category has tags attached to them. Tags like Death-/, Speed-/, Thrash-/, Black-/, White-/, Doom-/, (or whatever)-Metal are to be found all over the place. Allegiance is truly a pleasant surprise. What they deliver is pure, untarnished METAL- NO TAGS ATTACHED!!! The band has been around since 1990, and this is their second album. They have achieved great success Down Under thanx to hard work and dedication to their music (no free rides, No Sir). They have opened for major international bands like Pantera, Fear Factory, Machine Head, Sepultura to name a few. It's a shame that Allegiance is such a well hidden secret to the rest of the world. These days they're working on getting their music accessible overseas. Their goal is to land a distribution deal in Europe, USA (and Japan?). I sencerily hope they succeed in their quest, because their kind of Metal stands out like a beacon among all the confusing brands of Metal flying around today.
I call out to every fan of TRUE METAL in the world, flood the Metal labels/distributors E- & Snail mail boxes with demands of easy access to the power of ALLEGIANCE!!!!
