The Wiccan Rede

"An Ye Harm None, Do what Thou Will"

This is the Wiccan Rede, the only necessary rule of Wicca. The rule encompass much more than you might at first think.

In magick everything you do comes back. If you live your life peacefully and selflessly help others you will have a much better life than one who chooses to use people and think selfishly. You may have heard this referred to as Karma or Mojo.

There is a common belief in wicca that whatever energies are sent out come back three times, this is the rule of three. There are a few theories behind this rule. One is that the triple Goddess sends the energies back thus tripling it. Another and the one I find to be the most logical is that the energies sent out return along with the energies of whoever you tried to hurt plus the energies of the Lord and Lady who disapprove of your actions.

The only way to avoid this backlash is to make sure what you are doing is right. Most people do a divination of some sort before any work of magick to assure that their spell will have no adverse effects.

The Wiccan Rede says "harm none" harm not only means physical harm but also manipulation and forcing someone to do something the don't want to. Because of this love spells can be dangerous, forcing someone to love you is a horrible misuse of magick. Even though most cases of misuse are obvious some situations can fall into kind of a gray area. For instance someone you know is very sick maybe even dying and they're in pain. You do a spell to lend them healing energies. Good, right? But what if they want to die? What if the pain is too much or they're terminally ill? You've just extended their suffering and manipulated them into doing something they may not have wanted. Instead of a healing spell a spell that would help them reach their goal or be without pain would be better, that way if they wish to pass on they will, maybe less painfully.

Spells can be tricky but divination and common sense should help you avoid backlash. If you purposely manipulate, curse or hurt people yours is coming soon enough. No matter how many loopholes you find in the rules the Lord and the Lady know your true intent and you will get what's coming.
