The following is a list of Fae (Fairies) that you may encounter or call upon in Fairy Magick. The specific aspects of a given Fairy will vary depending upon the area and local beliefs. The Fae change and evolve as human perception of them changes and evolves. These creatures and peoples were created from human imagination and our need to explain certain unexplainable events happening around us and therefor change as our beliefs change.

Brownie  
Description: Under a foot tall, brownies are small. They wear brown cloaks and hoods.
Banes: Trying to give a brownie gifts or payment for it's services. They don't like being stepped on either.
Gifts: Leave milk and cakes for them every night
They attach themselves to families and do chores at night. Leaving them anything more than milk and cakes will cause them to depart.

Dwarfs (Dwarves)  
Description: About three to five feet tall with stubby legs, broad shoulders and a thick body. Dwarfs also have profuse facial hair.
Banes: Dwarfs are very uncomfortable in large open outdoor spaces. They don't like bright light.
Gifts: Metals and gems, any well crafted objects of metal, gems or stone

Dwarfs are quick tempered but very loyal. They can be found either solitary or in small groups. Those found in groups tend to be very traditional, they usually have a very rigid social structure. Dwarfs are known to be miners of metals and precious gems, and crafters of such materials. A dwarf companion will be very loyal but can be grumpy and stubborn.


Elves  

Description: Usually five to seven feet tall, thin, quick, with red, blond, or light-brown hair. They sometimes have green or blue catlike eyes. The most well known aspect of elves are their pointed ears.

Banes: Iron wards off and can harm or even kill them.
Gifts: Silver, Moonstone, Pearl, Quartz

Elves are often found in forests and other wooded places. Elves often command groups of other fairies. An elf will befriend only those with strong conviction and morals. Often times they will test a mortal before befriending them.

Elves are sometimes accompanied by magickal hunting dogs known as Cooshies. Large silver wolves that moves as fast as a large cat, the Cooshie will only leave it's forest home if accompanied by it's Elven master. It is said Cooshies have the abilities to heal and soothe sick or injured travelers.

Elves also ride fairy steed known as the Coomlaen, which appears as a tall, thin white or silver horse. A Coomlean can shapeshift but must return to it's horse form once a day. A Coomlaen and it's rider bond for life and a Coomlaen will defend it's rider to the death. To befriend a Coomlaen you must befriend it's rider.

Within the Elf tribe there are variations, one such being the Spriggans. They're described as one of the ugliest most dour type of fairy belonging to the Elven bloodline. They act as a type of honor guard to other fairies. They can be found in old ruins, burrows and castles. It is said they're the ghosts of giants and can grow to huge sizes at will.


Gnomes  
Description: Stand about one to two feet tall, gnarled rough skin,the males grow long beards
Banes: Bright light and open outdoor places.
Gifts: Beautiful stones and small trinkets
Gnomes live underground and only appear on the surface in deep forests. They tend to be collectors of trinkets. In more recent times they have been known to tinker with simple machinery involving many gears, pulleys and such usually steam powered.

Kobolds  
Description: Around two feet tall with the body of a child and the face of an old man
Banes: Wind and loud noises scare them away
Gifts: Food and milk every night
The kobold is a subterranean household fairy. They sleep on the hearth and help with the chores at night. They love to play pranks but are also very protective of their adoptive family and are capable of casting binding spells to protect them.
