Miranda stepped from the black sedan, and smoothed the front of her jeans. She glanced down at herself and sighed. She was not dressed in her best. The nagging voice in her heart was quick to point out that she wasn’t here to impress him with her sense of style. Nervously, Miranda wrung her hands together, and scanned the docks for the tall figure she knew so well.
“Remember, say nothing to him about the murder, the program, or where you’re headed.” Harris reminded her.
“You didn’t tell me where we’re headed, Harris.”
“Two minutes. Say goodbye, and get out.” he responded gruffly. Miranda nodded. Suddenly, her breath caught in her throat as she caught sight of him. Kevin paced the width of the dock and glanced at his watch. He was worried.
“And who wouldn’t be?” she asked herself. Inhaling deeply of the sea air, and bracing herself, Miranda began to walk out towards the dock. She set foot on the wooden boards, and stood for a moment starring at him.

Kevin halted in his pacing path suddenly, having caught sight of her. She looked worn out and haggard, a condition which he had never seen her in before. She had also never been so beautiful. They locked eyes and simply gazed at one another for a moment. He opened his arms, and she ran to him. He held her closely, crushing her body against his, afraid to let go. She returned his embrace tightly.
“Kevin.” Miranda whispered hoarsly.
“Where the hell were you? I was worried sick about you! You should have called me, not your friend!” he exclaimed fiercely. She pushed away from him abruptly.
“Friend?”
“Yeah, Shannon called to let me know about your mother. I’m sorry she’s so sick honey.” he replied, pulling her back to him.
“Kevin, I need you to listen to me, and listen well.” she ordered. Alarm slammed through his chest, her serious tone frightening him.
“Miranda, what’s wrong?” he asked, his eyes wide with concern.
“I only have a few minutes.” she said, pausing to brace herself. “My mother’s not sick. And that wasn’t my friend Shannon. I have to go away, Kevin. I have to leave.
“Wha-?!” he began, but she placed a finger against his lips as tears welled up in her eyes.
“Please! Kev, let me talk! I only have so long.” she pled, then continued. “I’m in trouble. I saw something I shouldn’t have, and now I have to go away. They weren’t going to let me say goodbye to you, but I had to. Kevin, I love you so much!” she finished, a sob tearing from her throat. Kevin placed his arms around her, and brought her close once more.
“Baby, you’re not making any sense, I don’t understand! Why are you in trouble? Can I get you out of it? Where are you going?” he fired the questions rapidly.
“Kev....I can’t tell you why or where. No, you can’t get me out of it.” she replied, hating the expression of terror in his eyes, though she knew her own echoed the same.
“Miranda, do you still love me?” he asked, thinking it was the only solution to her abandonment.
“I love you more than anything, Kevin, you know that. I’m just not allowed to tell you anything about this. I’m sorry, I’m so sorry.” she sobbed.
“When are you coming back?” he wondered. She pulled away and looked at him. “You aren’t coming back, are you?”
“I don’t know.”
“It’s bad, isn’t it?” he whispered.
“Yeah.” she murmured.
“Mira......I can’t do this without you. I can’t keep going. What about our life together? What about the record? I can’t DO THIS!” he cried.
“Kevin, look at me. You CAN do this. You have to. I won’t let you stop living your life and your dreams just because-” Miranda stopped herself in time, before she said something she shouldn’t.
“Because?” he prompted. She shook her head. “You can’t say.” it wasn’t a question.
“No, I can’t.”
“I love you.”
“I love you too.” she responded, and pulled him close, kissing his mouth sweetly. He devoured her kisses hungrily, and held tightly to her waist. She was a perfect fit in his arms, and he wanted never to let her go. Miranda wrapped her arms around Kevin’s neck and ran her fingers through his dark hair at the nape of his neck. She memorized the feel of him, knowing that she might never touch him again.
A whistle sounded on the afternoon air. Miranda broke the kiss to glance up as a tear trickled from the corner of her eye. It was Harris, he motioned to for her to return.
“Kevin, my time is up.” she said softly. He followed her gaze, letting his eyes rest upon the tall well muscled man who waited, leaning against the side of a black sedan. Kevin’s eyes skipped back to Miranda’s.
“Is he helping you?”
“Kevin, I can’t-”
“I know, I know.” he nodded, and looked down at the tops of his shoes. Miranda reached out and tilted his chin up, making eye contact. Tears fell from the corners of his eyes. Miranda leaned her forehead against his, and they starred at one another, tears dropping to the dock from both of their faces. “I’ll wait for you.” he said suddenly.
“No. Don’t. Please, be happy Kevin.” she implored desparately. “I don’t know if I......”
“I love you.” he reiterated, compulsivly taking a ring from his finger, and slidding it onto hers.
“Goodbye Kevin.” she whispered, then turned reluctantly and walked away. She reached the end of the pier; Kevin looked on as the man who waited for her, opened the door to the sedan, and helped her inside. The man went around to the driver’s side and got in.
Kevin watched the car recede into the distance, not aware of the tears which still fell down his cheeks. He dropped to his knees like a man run through with a sword, and held his head in his hands. “She didn’t even look back.”
