Chapter 6

Julie had just finished getting dressed when the phone rang. "Hey Jules. It's Brok!"

"Hey Brian. What's up?"

"Not much. Actually, I'm on my cell phone walking out to my car. My meeting just ended, and I thought I'd call you."

"Cool! So, you wanna do something today?" she asked, tentatively.

"I'd love to! Any ideas?"

"I don't know, but it's really hot outside, so I was thinking maybe we could go swimming or something." Julie suggested.

"Ok. Swmming it is, then! Can you be ready in like, fifteen minutes?"

"Sure!"

"Ok, then I'll just pick you up on my way home. See you then." Brian said.

Julie heard him start up his car over the cell phone, and laughed quietly. "Ok. Later!"

Julie put her swimsuit on under her clothes, grabbed a towel and some sunscreen, and waited for Brian to get there. While she was waiting, the phone rang. It was her parents calling to check up on her. While she was talking to her mom, the doorbell rang, and Julie had to put her mom on hold to let him in. "Come on in. I'll be ready in a sec- my mom's on the phone." Brian walked in and sat down on the couch while Julie went to finish her conversation.

"Who's there, Julie?'

"It's my date, mom. I gotta get going now. When are you guys coming home?"

"Your date? You guys aren't staying alone in the house, are you?"

"No, mom. We're going swimming."

"Who is this boy, anyways? Do I know him."

"I don't think you know him, Mom. His name's Brian. Mom, I really gotta go."

"Julie, I don't like the idea of you going out with someone I've never met before."

"Mom, I think it's time you trusted my judgement. He's a really sweet guy. You can meet him when you come home, ok?"

Her mother sighed over the phone. "ok, Sweetie. Just be careful. We're going to be coming home sometime tomorrow night, but we'll probably be pretty late so don't wait up."

"Ok, Mom. I'll see you later. Bye!" Julie said, and hung up the phone. "Finally! She can be such a nag sometimes! Ready to go?"

"Yup. I thought we'd go over to my friend AJ's house. He has a pool, and he probably won't mind if we use it." Brian said.

"That's cool. At least I won't have to put up with all the screaming youths at the community pool. Just you!"

"You know, sooner or later, you're going to pay for making fun of me so much!" Brian said. He drove to his house so he could change into his swimming trunks, and Julie sat on the floor of his kitchen playing his his dog, Tyke.

"You have a really nice house, Brian." Julie said once Brian had come back downstairs.

"Thanks. It's a little big for just one person, but I like it just the same."

"Did you call AJ and ask him if we could swim?"

"Yeah. He said that was cool as long as he gets to meet you first. He's a huge flirt, so watch out!" Brian said.

"I'll be sure and put my gard up!" Julie said. They got in the car and headed to AJ's house, which was about 25 minutes away. They chatted along the way about themselves more. Julie learned more about Brian's lifestyle, and Julie told Brian more about her life.

"When Trinity, my sister, was really young, I got so jealous because I was still trying to grow up too, but I always felt like she was stealing away my parent's attention. I realize now that she needed it, and it wasn't her fault, but it was still tough on me because my accomplishments and needs were always overtaken by hers. I know it must have been tough on them and everything, though. That's why I want to help work with the families as well as the disabled children, because you have to look at the whole picture, and not just one part of it."

"That's a pretty good idea. I guess it must have been hard on you, but it's really great that you're still trying to help out kids like your sister. Have you thought about what kind of job you want?"

"I've given it some thought, and I though it would be cool to start my own center in the future. I mean, a place that will not only help work with the kids, but that will also offer support and help educate the families as well. But, that's a long ways away. Just a dream, really."

"Well, dreams can come true if you really want them to, and you're willing to work for them. Just look at me."

"What are your goals now? I mean, you've already accomplished the successful singer and songwriter thing. What do you want to do now?" Julie asked.

"Well, I suppose that if someday the group decides to take a break for awhile, I'd like to settle down because I definatly want to start a family, and then I think maybe I'll be a writer and a producer or something that will allow me to do what I love, and still be around for my family."

"It sounds like you've got it all pretty much figured out!" Julie said, wishing she had her life planned out and set the way he did.

"It sounds like it, but it's really not. I wouldn't worry about trying to figure everything out right now. You gotta let things happen so you can make decisions. You just can't plan your entire life in one afternoon, you know?"

"Yeah, I guess you're probably right. I just feel like I need to have everything in order, but maybe I'll just kick back and relax for awhile. It is, after all, my summer vacation."

"Exactly!" Brian said, as he drove down AJ's long driveway. His house was set back pretty far off the road. He parked the car next to what Julie assumed was AJ's huge Expedition. She followed Brian around back, through a seciruty gate that Brian knew the code to. They walked out to the guitar-shaped pool, and AJ came running out the back door.

"Waz up guys? Oh, Brian! Who's this fine young lady?"

"AJ, this is Julie. Julie, this is AJ!"

"Hey! You swimming with us?" Julie asked.

"No, I gotta date. I'm taking Becky out to lunch before she leaves for LA. I'll leave the house open for you guys if you need anything, but if you leave before I get back, be sure to lock up. Help yourself to whatever's in the kitchen." AJ said.

"Thanks AJ! See ya later!" Brian said. AJ left, and Brian and Julie stripped down to their bathing suits and jumped into the pool.

"Brian, don't try anything tricky. I'm not that avid of a swimmer!" Julie said when she saw Brian heading toward her.

"Now how in the world can you be from Florida and be a bad swimmer?" Brian asked.

"I don't know. I can swim, I'm just not all that good at it." Julie said, laughing at herself. "How about a game of water basketball?" she suggested.

"Oh, you don't know what you're up against!" Brian said.

"Yeah, well, it'll probably be the only thing you'll ever beat me at!" Julie said as she swam over and grabbed the ball that was floating in the pool and threw it at Brian.

"I'll even be nice and give you a three point lead!" Brian said, as he spun the ball on the tip of his finger.

"Oh, thanks so much!" Julie said. Brian tried not to play too rough, but he still ended up beating Julie.

"Well, I let you win, you know!" Julie said when the game was over.

"Uh-huh! Sure you did!"

"I did, really!" she laughed as Brian splashed her.

"Let's go get something to drink." Brian suggested.

"Alrighty. Let's go raid AJ's kitchen!" Julie agreed. They climbed out of the pool and walked in through the back door leaving two tracks of puddles behind them. Julie opened the fridge while Brian went through his cupbards. "Let's see- we've got beer, beer, Cherry Coke, beer, and Mountain Dew. Take your pick!" Julie said, laughing.

"AJ likes to have parties, so he's always stocked on party supplies because he's never sure when he's going to have one. He'll just be sitting around one day and decide to throw a party that night."

Julie got out two Cokes, tossing one to Brian. "How long has he been going out with Becky?

"Only a few weeks. AJ can be very hard to tie down to a relationship. Most girls can't handle that, so his relationships will either be very short or very long."

"Oh, that's too bad. What about you?"

"Me? I'm into the serious relationship thing. My last girlfriend and I were together almost three years before I broke up with her."

"What happened? I mean, if you don't mind talking about it."

"No, it's ok. I know about your past, you should know mine. At first, Emily and I got along great, but I guess with my being gone, and her career taking off, we just changed into different people. It happens, and we both realized it was time to move on. We're still good friends, and we keep in touch, but we both know it can never be anything more, and I don't want it to be!"

"Wow! It's amazing you have remained friends. I'm not friends with any of my ex's. But then, they were all jerks and mean to me, so that's probably why."

"Julie, I would never hurt you intentionaly, and if I do, you can smack me!"

Julie was thrilled that he was already talking as if they were in a relationship, because it was only their second date, and nothing was official yet. She didn't hold too many doubts, though. "That's sweet of you! You wanna swim some more?"

"Sure. I need some more sunscreen, though. And from the looks of those pink shoulders you've got, so do you!"

Julie looked at her burned shoulders and groaned. "I always did burn easily." She helped Brian apply the lotion to his back and shoulders, and he did the same for her, gently masagging as he applied it. She turned around to face him. "Thanks" she whispered. He didn't respond, just stared deep into her eyes. They moved their heads towards each other ever so slowly, both wanting to kiss, but scared to make the moves. They were only inches apart when they heard AJ yelling across the yard.

"OH LOVEBIRDS, I'M HOME!!!"

Julie and Brian pulled apart, laughing at AJ's comment as he walked over to them in his swimming suit.

"Where's Becky?" Brian asked.

"In bed with the stomach flu. She didn't want me there cuz she didn't want me to catch it, so she made me leave. Her mom's there taking care of her, so I thought I'd go for a swim with you two, that is, unless you mind my using my own pool!"

Julie laughed. "Nope, we don't mind. We were just getting back in."

"Sure ya were!" he said.

The three of them played around in the pool for a few more hours until Brian and Julie decided to leave to get cleaned up for dinner. They stopped by Brian's place so he could shower and get cleaned up and then over to Julie's so she could do the same.

"Where are we going for dinner?" she asked.

"Actually, it's a surprise, but I'm sure you'll like it!"

Once Julie was ready, they got in the car and headed towards dinner. It was about a 45 minute drive until they finally reached the big surprise dinner.

"Brian, I love it! This is so sweet of you to go to all this trouble."
