They played a round of very competitive miniature golf. It was a very close game, and as they were on the fifteenth hole, they were tied. They moved onto the next hole, and Brian shot two, but then Julie got a hole in one. She squealed in delight, and Brian got a worried sort of look on his face as he became aware that he might lose. They had one hole left in the game, and Brian had to beat her by two strokes to win, and one to tie. He made Julie go first, so he would know what he had to shoot. Well, Julie shot a two, so it was going to be impossible for him to win, but he managed to get a hole-in-one, ending the game tied.
"I can't believe you tied the game!" Julie said.
"Well, you didn't actually think I was going to let you win, did you?" he teased.
"Actually, yes I did, but that's ok."
"You know what this means, don't you?"
"Yeah. Who's going to buy the ice cream?" Julie asked.
"Well, that's a good question, but that's not what I was thinking. What I meant was, now we're just going to have to go out another night and play again until one of us, most likely me, wins!" he said.
"Brian! I can't believe that you actually think you're going to win! I'm going to practice every day, and there's no way you will beat me!"
"So, who is going to buy the ice cream?" he asked.
"I'll buy it. I mean, from now on, I'm going to win all the time, and you'll be buying it all the time, so I'll pick this one up!" Brian just stood there with a mock insulted look on his face before Julie snuck up beside him and put her arms around his waist, and tickled him.
"You don't play fair, Julie Bordine!" he said, grabbing her hands and turning around.
He made a move to tickle her, but she backed away and said, "Touch me, and your ice cream's out the window!" He immediately dropped her hands, and put his up in a surrender.
"Hey! It's gonna be ok, just don't threaten the ice cream, ok?" they laughed, and drove over to the old-fashioned ice cream parlor.
The ice cream parlor was a little bit crowded, but they didn't seem to mind the wait. They just enjoyed each other's company. Brian ordered Superman Swirl, and Julie ordered an Espresso Shake. All of the tables inside were full, so they decided to walk around outside for awhile. They kept walking after they had finished their ice cream, and got to know each other a little bit better.
"So, would you mind telling me more about your band?" Julie asked.
"What would you like to know?" he asked, sounding uncomfortable.
"Anything. What you like, what you don't like, what you do....."
"Ok. Well, to start, I'll tell you who we are. Have you ever heard of the Backstreet Boys?" he asked, now starting to act nervous.
"Duh, Brian! I knew you were a Backstreet Boy!" Julie teased him.
"You mean, you knew who I was all along?" he asked, surprised.
"Well, it would be kinda hard for me not to know who Brian of the BSB is, but I didn't know who you were." Julie said.
"Oh, I see. It's just sorta wierd to have someone be able to act so cool about it. Usually, I get alot of screams and squeals. It's flattering and all, but sometimes, I just want to be a normal guy."
"I understand that. I mean, I think I do, because it's not like I've ever experienced that before or anything."
"Well, I'm really glad that I met you. I mean, it's nice to take a girl out on a date who's not asking me constant questions about Nick, and how much money I make, and what it's like to be a Backstreet Boy." Brian continued to tell Julie about what it's really like to be a member of the band, and it's up's and down's. She listened, in fascination as they walked side by side. When he finished, he said, "So, what about you? I want to know everything about working in a movie theater!"
"Oh, please! What's there to know?" she laughed.
"No, I really want to know! I mean, do you get to see free movies and stuff?" as he said this, their hands brushed against each other, and Julie felt Brian grab hold of her hand.
She smiled at him before she told him all about her glamerous job serving popcorn. "Well, I get to see free movies, and I'm allowed to bring guests with me. I have to make the popcorn, and serve it along with all the other food, and then I clean up. That's about all there is to it."
They continued to walk around, and Brian noticed that Julie hadn't stoped smiling since they started walking. As they were heading back towards his car, a gentle breeze had picked up, and Brian noticed Julie getting chills, so he let go of her hand, and put his arm around her waist, pulling her over towards him. They didn't talk very much on their way back to the car, and Julie was almost sad when they got there, because the night seemed to be ending, and she was having such a good time, and she was so happy, that she never wanted it to end.
"I am having such a good time tonight!" she told him.
"Me too. I really enjoyed myself. Do you want me to take you back to your house now?" he asked.
"Well, not really, but I think I probably should. You can come in for awhile and watch tv or something if you want." she suggested.
"Ok. That sounds fine with me." they got in the car and drove over to Julie's house.
"How far away from here do you live?" she asked.
"I live about fifteen minutes away, why?" he said.
"I don't know. I was just wondering where you lived, that's all."
She let them inside the house, and were greeted by her family's cocker spaniel, Chica. She barked a little at Brian, but he petted her on the head and played with her a little bit. Julie took Chica outside, and then showed Brian around her house. "I won't take you upstairs, because it's never very clean up there. Well, it's mostly my bathroom and my room that are messy, but, you know. Anyways, this is the living room. That's my piano, and then the table and chairs and stuff is all my sister's. This is sort of her study room."
"You play piano?" he asked.
"Yup. I started lessons when I was three years old. I was going to major in it in college, but I decided not to, but I kept music as my minor in case things don't work out the way I had planned." she said.
"You'll have to play me something sometime." he said.
"Well, give me a few days to practice. I haven't played in awhile. Then, you can sing along with me!"
She showed him the kitchen, and offered him something to drink, but he politely declined. He excused himself to the bathroom, and while he was gone, Julie checked the messages on the answering machine. One was from her parents, saying they'd be home tomorrow afternoon. The next one was some telemarketer selling her something she was sure her parents didn't need, but the third one was her ex-boyfriend, Dave. Brian had returned from the restroom in time to hear his message.
"Julie, it's Dave. Listen, I'm sorry I've been such a jerk. I changed, and I want to work things out with you. Will you please talk to me? We can talk things through, and see what happens from there. Give me a call later." Julie didn't notice Brian standing behind her, and she just stood there starring at the answering machine.
"Do you mind my asking who Dave is?" he finally spoke.
"Brian, you scared me! Anyways, Dave is my ex, and I dumped him over six months ago because he was a total jerk, and he didn't fit my personality at all. He never wanted to do things- he was like a hermit most of the time, and then it just started going down hill. It was a bitter breakup, and I'll get calls from him every once in awhile, but I always ignore him. I probably won't hear from him again for awhile." she said, hoping Brian wasn't thinking what she thought he was thinking.
"So, you don't have feelings for him anymore?" he asked.
"None whatsoever. There's nothing for you to worry about, Brian. I can tell what you're thinking, and you don't need to worry about it. I'm not going to call him back, let alone see him again." she assured him.
"Geez! What are you, like a mind reader, or something? I was just checking. I mean, I know it's only our first date, but I feel like I've known you for a long time. It's wierd." he admitted. "I know. It's kinda fun, like we got to completely skip over the getting-to-know- you jitters, but we didn't even know each other. It just seemed like we were old friends. You wanna go watch some tv?"
"Sure." he said. She led him down to the basement, and they sat close to each other on the couch. He finally put his arm around her shoulders, and she leaned against him.
They clicked through the channels for awhile, and when Brian noticed that Julie seemed to be getting pretty tired, he got up to leave.
"Will you call me tomorrow?" she asked.
"Sure. I've got a meeting, so I won't be able to call until around 3:00." he said.
"Ok. I should be awake by then!" she joked. "Thanks for everything! I really had fun tonight." she said.
"It was my pleasure." Brian said. He kissed her on the cheek, and walked out to his car. She watched him from the door until he drove away down the street. She closed the door, and went back downstairs to lay down on the couch and watch some more tv. She could smell Brian's cologne on the couch, and she was reminded of everything that had happend that night. She fell asleep right there on the couch, and slept soundly through the night.
As Brian drove home, he couldn't stop thinking about Julie. He
remembered
how
her smile seemed to light up the room, and how much she loved to laugh,
and
had the
ability to laugh at just about anything. There was something about her
that
just made him
want to always be around her. He didn't know exactly what it was, maybe
just
the natural
vibe she seemed to give off, but he could tell that he was going to end
up
falling for her
hard, if he hadn't already.
