Chapter 34

Julie was waiting up in bed when Brian came back from Nick's.

"Everything ok with Nick and Shelly?" she asked.

"Yup. They're all cool. He apologized for her not being able to get a hold of him but she didn't seem too upset." He paused. "Jules, Shelly's dad hit her tonight. She's got a pretty nice black eye."

Julie gasped. "Is she ok? What an ass! I can't believe he hit her!"

"I think she's ok. I don't know what happened but judging by the look on her face tonight, I think something major has gone down. I'm just glad she's safe with Nick. I think she'll be able to talk to him about it."

Julie was still debating whether or not she should tell Brian what she saw.

"Something wrong, sweetie?" he asked, watching her serious face.

"Actually, I need to tell you something."

"Is this good or bad?"

"Well, it's bad but not really for us. I saw something tonight that I really wish I hadn't seen."

"What happened?" he asked, joining her on the bad and wrapping his arms around her.

"Well, I went to the park to look for Shelly because that's usually where she runs off to. I was walking around the playground when I saw her and AJ sitting on the monkey bars. They were kissing."

Brian's eyes widened. "Did you say anything to them?"

"No, I just stood back. I didn't want them to know I was there. I hid until they left. I don't know what to do, Bri. I don't want to cause anymore problems for my friends. I mean, I already almost ruined things for Kate and AJ once, I don't want to put Kate through that again but what Shelly did was wrong. But they're both my best friends and no matter what decision I make, one of them will end up getting hurt. I mean, what if Kate finds out that I know? She'll be furious with me for not saying anything. And what about Nick? I mean, he's my friend too and I don't want him to get hurt either. What should I do?"

"Jules, I think you'd be better pretending you never saw that happen. You're right- saying something about it will make everything worse. And besides that, you don't really know what was happening. It could have just happened, you know? Maybe they didn't mean anything by it."

Julie sighed. "I guess you're right. I just wish I hadn't seen any of that, then I wouldn't be so worried about it."

"It'll all work out, I'm sure. So, did you want to do something tomorrow?"

"I don't know, what did you have in mind?"

"I thought maybe we could just go and hang out at the beach or something. We have to be back in the studio next week and I wanted to spend some quality time with you."

"That sounds fine to me. We'd better get some sleep then!"

Shelly and Nick stayed up all night talking about what had happened that night. She told him the whole story, well, almost the whole story anyways. She conviently left out the whole part about AJ coming to pick her up. Nick had been very understanding about it and though he couldn't relate to her situation much, he was a great listener and offered support when he could. Shelly was very glad that night that she'd given Nick a chance because she had no idea what she would have done with herself that night if it wasn't for him.

AJ went home but he was unable to sleep. His mind was cluttered with thoughts about Shelly and with thoughts about Kate. He wanted Kate, that he was sure of, but he couldn't understand what had happened with Shelly. His mind was telling him that they had just connected for a moment because they had both been able to understand something about each other that most people wouldn't have a clue about. His heart was telling him something else. "She's with Nick. You're with Kate. So stop thinking about it so much and start looking foward to your hot date tomorrow night." he told himself as he lay in bed looking up at the blank ceiling.
